In a medium saucepan, whisk together milk, cream, and pumpkin puree over medium heat.
Add cocoa powder, whisking until fully incorporated and no lumps remain.
Add chopped dark chocolate, brown sugar, vanilla extract, pumpkin pie spice, and salt.
Whisk continuously until chocolate is melted and mixture is smooth and hot, about 5-7 minutes. Do not let it boil.
Remove from heat and pour into mugs.
Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice, if desired.
Notes
For a smoother texture, blend the hot chocolate with an immersion blender before serving.- I probably wouldn’t go over 70% cocoa in the dark chocolate, it may not be sweet enough. But if you want to use a higher cocoa percentage, just adjust the sugar content.
