Instructions
Peel, core, and slice 5 pounds of crisp sweet apples.
Place the sliced apples into the bottom of a slow cooker.
Add in 1 cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg, ¼ teaspoon ground cloves and ¼ teaspoon salt.
Stir well to evenly coat the apples with the sugar and spices.
Cover and cook on LOW for 10 hours or HIGH for 5 hours.
Stir the mixture once about halfway through the cooking time.
When the apples are very soft, turn off the slow cooker and allow the mixture to cool slightly.
Use an immersion blender to puree until smooth. Alternatively, carefully transfer the mixture to a blender and blend in batches.
Stir in 1 tablespoon vanilla extract.
Transfer the apple butter to jars or airtight containers.
Refrigerate until ready to use.
Serve on toast, biscuits, oatmeal, yogurt, or enjoy however you like!
Notes
Refrigerate the apple butter for up to 2 weeks.
