Layer half of the cake pieces in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Top with approximately ? of the 21 oz can cherry pie filling.
Add the remaining angel food cake pieces on top of the cherry layer.
In a large bowl, whisk together 1½ cups milk and 1 (3.4 oz) box instant vanilla pudding mix until smooth.
Add 1 cup sour cream and mix until fully combined.
Spread the pudding mixture evenly over the cake layer. Work quickly, as the pudding will continue to thicken as it sits.
Spread 1 (8 oz) container thawed whipped topping evenly over the pudding layer.
Spoon the remaining ? of the cherry pie filling over the whipped topping layer.
Cover and refrigerate for 4–5 hours before serving.
Just before serving, sprinkle 1 Tbsp toasted sliced almonds over the top and enjoy.
Notes
Store any leftover cake in the refrigerator (covered) for up to 4-5 days. Make sure that you chill the cake for 4-5 hours before serving so that all the flavors can combine and the pudding layer can set fully. It’s ok to let the cake sit overnight before serving as well.
