Brown 1 pound ground beef, 1 pound Italian ground sausage, and ½ diced onion in a large stockpot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat until the meat is fully cooked and the onion is tender.
Drain any excess grease. Add 1 tablespoon minced garlic and cook for 1 minute, stirring frequently, until fragrant.
Stir in 4 cans (15 ounces each) crushed tomatoes, 2 cans (15 ounces each) tomato sauce, 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste, 2 bay leaves, 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning, 1 tablespoon sugar, ½ teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon black pepper, and ½ cup beef broth.
Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Simmer uncovered for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Remove and discard the bay leaves before serving.
