Do I Cook the Ground Turkey before adding to the Crock Pot?

Yes, we recommend cooking the ground turkey before adding to the crock pot. We prefer cooking the turkey before adding as it prevents it from clumping up while cooking the crock pot.

If you are needing a new Crock Pot, this Instant Pot Aura allows you to cook the meat right in the crock pot.

Ingredients needed - ground turkey, olive oil, onion, diced tomatoes, crushed tomatoes, minced garlic, italian seasoning, salt and pepper, lasagna noodles, ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese

Ingredients

  • Ground Turkey
  • Olive Oil
  • Onion, finely diced
  • Petite Diced Tomatoes (14.5 oz)
  • Crushed Tomatoes (15 oz each)
  • Minced Garlic
  • Italian Seasoning
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Lasagna Noodles (uncooked)
  • Ricotta Cheese
  • Mozzarella Cheese, divided
  • Parmesan Cheese

How to make Turkey Lasagna in the Crock Pot:

  • Cook Ground Turkey – Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat.  Then add in the ground turkey and diced onions and cook.  Sauté until the onions are soft and the turkey is browned.
  • Add in additional ingredients – Then add in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minutes until the garlic is aromatic.  Then add in the crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, Italian Seasoning, salt and pepper.
  • Continue cooking until heated thoroughly – Stir and cook for 7-8 minutes until heated through and well combined.  Then remove the pan from the heat.
  • Mix together Cheeses – In a separate medium bowl, stir together the ricotta cheese, 1 ½ cups mozzarella cheese and Parmesan Cheese.

  • Prepare Crock Pot – Spray a 6 quart crock pot with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Add Layer Sauce to Crock Pot – Then pour a layer of sauce on the bottom of the crock pot (approximately 1-1 ½ cups).
  • Layer Noodles – Then place a layer of the lasagna noodles on top.  It’s ok to break some of the noodles to cover the top of the sauce.
  • Add Cheese Layer – Then layer approximately ⅓ of the cheese mixture on top followed by approximately 1 cup of the ground turkey sauce.
  • Repeat Layering – Repeat these layers 2 more times making sure to end with the meat sauce.  Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup of the mozzarella cheese on top.
  • Cook Lasagna – Cover and cook the lasagna on low for 4-5 hours until the noodles are soft.

What to serve with crock pot turkey lasagna?

The tomato sauce is so flavorful and delicious and you will want something to dip into that sauce.

  • Make Cheese Sticks – We love Garlic Bread Cheese Sticks Recipe and it is perfect for getting every last bit of that amazing sauce. Preheat the oven and make some bread.
  • Add a Salad – We often serve a simple salad with this meal. It is quick and easy.
  • Serve a Vegetables – You could also try Roasted Green Beans or learn how to steam broccoli in the microwave for a super easy veggie side dish.

We love to keep things simple around here so we can get dinner on the table fast. See Side Dishes for Lasagna for more ideas.

Slow Cooker Lasagna Tips:

  • Marinara Sauce – We recommend using your favorite marinara sauce. There are so many to choose from and the added flavor really brings the ingredients together.
  • Uncooked Noodles – Use regular uncook lasagna noodles to prepare the meal. You can use wheat or white lasagna noodles and they both taste great.
  • Let lasagna Rest – After cooking lasagna, make sure you let it rest for at least 20 minutes. This makes it easier to slice and serve.

Can you make this Vegetarian?

Yes, you can. Just omit the ground beef. You can add in some additional vegetables such as zucchini and you won’t miss the meat.

Variation Ideas:

  • Change the Meat – You can use ground beef and ground turkey together if you want. I have even added in some ground sausage.
  • Add Ricotta Cheese – Add a spoonful of ricotta cheese to the top of the noodles for added cheese flavor.
  • Add in Some Vegetables – We love to sneak in some vegetables. This is a great way to add some spinach.

  2. We senior citizens that are alone trying to cook for one really need help. We all end up living on TV dinners or things we try to cook and have to eat it for days. I personally have tried to cut down receipts but they never taste right. We all end up throwing out so much food or just eating whatever. Is there anything you could do to help us with. Just bread alone u end up throwing out half a loaf or try freezing it and it becomes dry. We can’t even buy a pkg of saltines as there are way too many in pkg. why can’t they make food to buy for one or two people other than frozen dinners that taste like cardboard. Thanks for your help
