Why You’ll Love this Dirty Soda Recipe!

A woman with long dark hair, wearing earrings and a burgundy top, smiles at the camera in front of a textured, beige background.

Dirty soda went viral on TikTok for good reason — the combination of fizzy soda flavored syrups and a creamy swirl is genuinely as good as it sounds.

I was skeptical the first time but now I love making a dirty soda bar at home so everyone can mix their own.

The best part is that soda shops charge $6–8 for this and homemade costs about $1.70 — so we skip the special trip and make it any day of the week.

What is a Dirty Soda?

A dirty soda is just regular soda “dirtied up” with a splash of cream and flavored syrup. The trend started in Utah, where soda shops like Swig built their whole business around custom, syrup-and-cream sodas — and it exploded everywhere else once it hit TikTok.

The cream is what makes it “dirty,” giving the fizzy soda a smooth, milkshake-like finish, kind of like a root beer float you can sip through a straw.

Ingredients

A glass bottle of Coca-Cola, three small bowls with different liquids, and a container of ice cubes are arranged on a white hexagonal tile surface—perfect for crafting a refreshing Dirty Soda Recipe.
  • Diet Coke – You can also make with Dr Pepper, Coca-cola or Root Beer
  • Coconut Syrup – You can use coconut cream if you would like instead of the coconut syrup and heavy cream. It will have a similar flavor in this easy recipe.
  • Lime – We think fresh lime juice make it taste the best
  • Heavy Cream – You can substitute with half and half. Coconut Creamer can also be used
  • Ice – Nugget ice is the best

Budget tip: Don’t want to buy a bottle of syrup? Use ¼ cup of a flavored coffee creamer (coconut, vanilla, or French vanilla) in place of the coconut syrup and heavy cream — one ingredient does both jobs.

Recipe Notes

You can use coconut cream if you would like instead of the coconut syrup and heavy cream. It will have a similar flavor in this easy recipe.
Recipe Tips
  • Chill Soda – Keeps the drink extra refreshing.
  • Add the Lime – Adds a pop of brightness to balance the sweetness.
  • Dairy Free – Use coconut cream, almond milk, or oat milk.
  • Serving a crowd? For 8 people, plan on two 2-liter bottles of soda, one bottle of syrup, and about 1 cup of heavy cream or half and half — plenty for everyone to build their own glass with room to spare.
  • What is nugget ice? It’s the soft, chewable ice you get at Sonic or a soda shop. It’s not required — regular ice cubes work great too — but nugget ice melts a little faster and soaks up flavor, which is part of what makes soda shop drinks taste so good.
Dirty Soda Ideas
  • Cherry Vanilla Twist – Dr. Pepper + cherry + vanilla syrup + cream.
  • Coconut Lime Refresher – Sprite + coconut syrup + lime + cream.
  • Caramel Root Beer Float – Root beer + caramel syrup + cream.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Dirty Soda Made of?

A classic dirty soda is made with diet coke, heavy cream, coconut flavored syrup and lime. But you can use any type of soda to make this delicious, popular drink.

How to Store Leftovers

This drink recipe is best served when made fresh. Store ingredients separately for the best results.

Why did my cream curdle or look foamy in my dirty soda?

This is totally normal and still safe to drink! It happens because the acid in the soda or lime juice reacts with the cream. To avoid it, use very cold cream and pour it in last, right before serving. A gentle stir brings it all back together.

Two glasses filled with a frothy, iced brown drink and red-and-white striped straws sit on a table. Lime wedges and Coca-Cola bottles suggest this is the perfect Dirty Soda Recipe setup, with white kitchen items in the background.

Can’t wait to try this using my almond milk in place of the cream. Could maple syrup be used in this recipe or would it be too sweet?

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

That sounds delicious! Almond milk should work well. If you’re using maple syrup, I’d start with a small amount since it will add both sweetness and a bit of maple flavor. You can always add more to taste. I hope you enjoy it, and I’d love to hear how it turns out!

Leftovers? What leftovers? I love this beverage. I find, that for my taste, diet Coke, 2 tbsp. lime juice, and 2 tbsp cream of coconut make the best soda. That’s just my opinion. The diet soda keeps this from sugar overload. Try it!

Is there a substitute that can be used in the place of coconut syrup?

      1. Carrie Barnard says:

Absolutely! ? If you don’t have coconut syrup, you can use a small splash of coconut extract instead. Just start with a little since it’s more concentrated. You could also leave it out if you prefer, but the coconut flavor is what gives a dirty soda its signature taste. I hope you enjoy it!

    1. Sheri MacNutt says:

Doesn’t the lime cause the cream to curdle?

      1. Carrie Barnard says:

Great question! ? It can look slightly curdled if everything is mixed together too quickly, but it’s still perfectly safe to drink. I like to add the cream last and stir gently, or pour it over plenty of ice, which helps keep everything smooth. It still tastes delicious!

Okay I have never tried one of your drink recipes before but this looks delicious! Im having friends over tomorrow for a pool party and I am going to make these with Coke and Caramel Root Beer Floats! I am a sucker for Caramel and floats but have never combined the two. Genius! I’d like to make a suggestion if I may. Please, please post a Copycat recipe for “Homemade Butterbeer” from Harry Potter! I made them for my daughter’s 5th birthday but that recipe was very complicated and required a lot of ingredients. I was also serving like 50 people so I would love a simplified but awesome recipe from you to make for my kids and grand baby. Thank you so much!??????
