White Wine Vinegar is white wine that has been fermented. It is oxidated to give it that sweet and tangy flavor. It is an ingredient that can easily be found at your local grocery store.

How to Choose the Best Substitute?

When picking the best substitute for white wine vinegar it will all depend on the acidity, the flavor and even the color of the recipe that you are making. For recipes that color and flavor are important, stick with Champagne Vinegar, Rice Vinegar or honey vinegar.

When flavor and acidity is important, pick sherry vinegar or red wine vinegar. These recipes will be good for brining or pickling.

If none of the substitutions are not available, you might just have to try and use what you have on hand. Start small amounts and add as you want to enhance the flavor.

Easy Substitutes for White Wine Vinegar:

There are many different substitutions for White Wine Vinegar. The best substitution is my opinion is Red Wine Vinegar. The flavors are similar and your probably already have it in your pantry.

If you don’t have Red Wine Vinegar, then we have gathered some other substitutions.

1. Red Wine Vinegar:

Red Wine Vinegar is a great substitute when you recipe calls for white wine vinegar. It is a pantry staple for most house holds and can easily be found at the store.

Red Wine Vinegar has a slight bolder taste but the taste is very similar.

  • Substitute 1:1 for Red Wine Vinegar when you are out of White Wine Vinegar.

2. Rice Vinegar:

Rice Vinegar is a great substitution but it has less acidic flavor and it much milder. It can be easily found in the grocery store on the Asian or ethnic aisle. Rice Vinegar is made from fermented rice.

Make sure to get the unseasoned rice vinegar as the seasoned rice vinegar one contains additional ingredients. It also will change the flavoring of the recipe because of the added sugar and salt in it.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar:

Apple Cider Vinegar has more of a bolder flavor than white wine vinegar. It may not work well in every recipe, but it can work if you don’t have anything else.

  • Substitute 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar for 1 tablespoon of white wine vinegar.

4. Champagne Vinegar:

We love the flavor of Champagne Vinegar. Champagne Vinegar is different from white and red vinegar as it is fermented by champagne.

Even though it has a milder flavor than regular vinegar, you will want to add a little more when substituting.

  • Substitute 1 ½ tablespoon of Champagne Vinegar to 1 tablespoon of white wine vinegar.

5. Sherry Vinegar:

Sherry Vinegar is a great replacement especially in our Spanish recipes. It is lightly sweet and mild in flavor. If you have had a jar of Sherry Vinegar for awhile, you might notice that it has gotten darker. It doesn’t mean it has gotten bad, the flavor will just be stronger.

We like using this substitute especially if we are out of red wine vinegar.

  • Substitute 1:1 ratio for white wine vinegar

6. Lemon Juice:

Lemon juice will work in a pinch if you have nothing else. This citrus juice is not the first choice for a substitution, but it acetic acid flavor will give you that similar flavor.

Since lemon juice has a distinct flavor, it may not work in all recipes. But it is a great replacement when making salad dressings or marinades.

7. Other Vinegars:

There are other types of vinegars that might work. It will depend on the recipe. You can try balsamic vinegar or regular distilled white vinegar may also be a good substitute.

When a recipe calls for specific white wine vinegar you have to be careful what you replace it with when you are out. Some of these substitutes will change the flavor profile of what you are preparing.

Water is also a Good Substitute:

Water will not replace the flavoring that vinegar does but it will give you the liquid that is needed for your dish.

So if a recipe calls for a cup of vinegar, then you replace with ¾ cup of water. This will help your recipe for not being dry.
