Ingredients

Ingredients needed - popcorn, sugar, milk, corn syrup, salt, vanilla, pink food coloring
  • Popped Popcorn – Microwave popcorn, air-popped popcorn, or store-bought plain popcorn all work. If you’re feeding a crowd, popping kernels on the stovetop or with an air popper is often the cheapest option.
  • Granulated Sugar – Adds a hint of sweetness. Store brand sugar works just as well.
  • Whole Milk – Whole milk gives the sugar coating a creamy, rich texture, but you can use whatever milk you already have on hand. 2%, skim, or even shelf-stable milk will work just fine—no need to buy something special.
  • Light Corn Syrup  – Corn syrup helps create that smooth, glossy coating and keeps the popcorn from turning grainy. Store-brand corn syrup works perfectly and is usually much cheaper than name brands.
  • Salt – A small amount of salt balances the sweetness and keeps the popcorn from tasting overly sugary. Don’t skip it—this is what gives the popcorn that classic sweet-and-salty flavor everyone loves.
  • Vanilla Extract – Vanilla adds warm flavor and gives this popcorn its old-fashioned taste. Pure or imitation vanilla both work, so use what you have. Imitation vanilla is a great budget-friendly option.
  • Pink Food Coloring – Food coloring gives the popcorn its fun, festive look. You only need a few drops, so one bottle lasts a long time. You can easily swap in other colors for holidays or parties without changing the recipe.

How to Make Pink Popcorn

Step 1 – Line Baking Sheet – Place parchment paper on 2 large baking sheet.  Place the popcorn in 1 or 2 large bowls depending on the size of your bowls.

A saucepan filled with a white liquid sits on a marble surface next to a small bowl of dark liquid and a container of pink gel food coloring, ready for making vibrant Pink Popcorn.

Step 2 – Heat Ingredients – Combine sugar, milk, corn syrup and salt in a medium saucepan over medium heat.  Whisk and stir constantly until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Step 3 – Add in Vanilla and Pink food coloring – Heat the mixture until it’s approximately 230 degrees.  Check the temperature of the mixture with a candy thermometer.  Then remove the mixture from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract and pink food coloring.

Step 4 – Pour sauce over the popcorn – Pour the sugar mixture over top of the popcorn. Then stir until the popcorn is evenly coated with the corn syrup mixture with a spatula.  Spread the popcorn onto the baking sheets.  Let the colored popcorn sit at room temperature until it’s dry and set.

Tips for Success

  • Popcorn Kernels – Make sure to remove the popcorn kernels before pouring the mixture over the top.
  • Heat Mixture – We recommend using a candy thermometer to check the temperature of the heated mixture. Remove the mixture from heat and mix in the vanilla and pink food coloring.
  • Candy Popcorn – Feel free to use other flavors of extract or other colors for this candy popcorn. It is perfect for many occasions.
  • Resting Popcorn – After pouring the mixture over the popcorn, allow the popcorn to rest before storing.
  • Line Baking Pans – Before pouring the popcorn on the baking sheet, make sure to line with parchment paper. This makes for an easy cleanup.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Sprinkles – You can add sprinkles to this popcorn recipe for a fun and festive treat.
  • Change the Popcorn Color – Red food coloring can be added to make this popcorn a red color. In fact, you can use other types of food coloring to change the color of the popcorn.
  • Nuts – Add nuts to the popcorn after adding the syrup on to the popcorn. This adds texture and flavor.
  • Chocolate – For added flavor, drizzle chocolate over the top for a candy coated popcorn treat.
  • Change the Flavor – We used vanilla extract in this recipe, but you easily use other types of flavor. We suggest orange, coconut, strawberry, or almond extract.
  • Popcorn – Use microwave popcorn, air popper popcorn, or store bought popcorn. We recommend using plain popcorn but you can use what you have on hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make Pink Popcorn ahead of time?

Yes! Pink Popcorn is a great make-ahead snack. Once the coating is fully set, store it in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks, making it perfect for parties, holidays, or gifting.

What kind of popcorn works best for this recipe?

Plain popcorn works best—microwave, air-popped, or store-bought. Just be sure it’s unbuttered so the coating sticks properly. This is a great way to use inexpensive popcorn you already have on hand.

Do I need a candy thermometer to make Pink Popcorn?

A candy thermometer helps ensure the sugar mixture reaches the right temperature (about 230°F), but if you don’t have one, cook the mixture until the sugar is fully dissolved and it thickens slightly while bubbling. This recipe is forgiving and works well for home cooks.

Why is my popcorn sticky or soft?

If the popcorn hasn’t fully dried yet, it may feel sticky. Spread it out on parchment paper and let it sit at room temperature until completely set. Storing it too soon can also trap moisture, so make sure it’s fully cooled first.
