Can you freeze Homemade Oreos?

Yes, these Homemade Oreos freeze great. Freezing these cookies as it saves time to make the dough ahead of time.

We make the dough and roll into balls. We place the dough balls on a cookie and freeze. This prevents them from sticking.

Once frozen, we place in a freezer safe container. They will freeze well for about 3 months.

Once you are ready to make them, place frozen dough on a baking sheet and bake. You may need to add a few extra minutes to your baking time.

Variation Ideas:

  • Add flavoring to the filling – To change the filling flavoring, you can add in mint, peppermint, or lemon extract. This would be a perfect idea for holiday baking.
  • Dipped Oreos – Melt some chocolate and dip your homemade oreos into them for an extra chocolatey flavor.
  • Dye the Cream Cheese filling – If you are making these cookies for a specific holiday or a birthday party, you can use food coloring to dye the filling.
  • Add-Ins – Add in some mini dark chocolate chips or sprinkles to the filling. This is my kids favorite thing to do.
  • Cake Mix – If you prefer, you can make cookies out of a cake mix. This is a quick to make these homemade oreos. Devils Food Cake Mix would be a good choice.
  • Ice Cream – Instead of using a cream cheese filling, sandwich the cookies between ice cream then freeze the ice cream cookies.

Tips for Homemade Oreos:

  • Butter at Room Temperature – When preparing your ingredients, make sure your butter is at room temperature. You don’t want melted butter as your cookies might spread to thin.
  • Line Baking Pans – Using parchment paper makes cleanup a breeze by lining your baking pans.
  • Cool cookies completely – Before adding the filling, make sure your cookies have cooled completely.
  • Wrap the dough – You can wrap the dough in plastic wrap if you need to wait to bake the dough.
