We Love Easy 4th of July Desserts:

I don’t know about you but when it comes to Independence day my family has to eat all things red, white, and blue. This is especially true about desserts. These cookies would also be perfect for Memorial Day!

When it comes to making desserts, especially when we are hosting a get together, I like desserts that have simple ingredients. This recipe only requires a few ingredients and the perfect dessert to make at the last minute.  We also love make a flag cake.

Ingredients needed - Oreo cookies, red candy melts, blue candy melts, sprinkles

Ingredients:

How to Make 4th of July Chocolate Covered Oreos:

  • Prepare your area – Place wax paper onto a flat surface, preferably a cutting board or baking sheet. Clear a space for this cutting board or baking sheet in your refrigerator.
  • Add Candy Melts to Bags – Place 15 red candy melts into a sealable sandwich bag, but do not seal. Place 15 blue candy melts in a sealable sandwich bag, but do not seal. Set both bags aside.
A bowl of blue and red chocolate melts on a cutting board lined with parchment paper. Two forks and a package of oreos
  • Melt Blue Candy – Place the remaining blue candy melts into a microwave safe bowl. Microwave on high for 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds until melted.

  • Place Cookie on Parchment Paper – Flip the cookie over with a fork and gently lift out of the bowl, wiping excess on the edge. Place cookie onto prepared cutting board or baking sheet. I like to put down parchment paper first. Repeat until you have half of the cookies coated.

How to Dip Oreo in Chocolate:

We recommend using a fork or a spoon to dip the Oreo in the Chocolate. We have even used our hands but that gets really messy.

Using a small bowl or short glass is helpful in getting the Oreo dipped in the chocolate. This is also helpful in melting the chocolate.

What is the Best Way to Melt Chocolate:

When melting the chocolate, we placed the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl and heated. We heat in 30 second intervals, so we don’t run the risk of burning the chocolate.

You can also melt the chocolate in a double broiler if you have one.

Variation Ideas:

  • Change the Cookie – Any type of store bought Oreo will work. We have used vanilla or chocolate peanut butter Oreo. You can even use double stuffed Oreo.
  • Add a Stick in the Oreo – You can easily add in a stick to the Oreo. It would resemble a cake ball.
  • Change the Candy Melts – These colors we used are perfect for the patriotic holidays. But you can use different colors for the holiday you are celebrating.
  • Use Different Sprinkles – My kids love to add the sprinkles to these chocolate covered Oreos. We like to use sprinkles that match the holiday we are celebrating.

Tips for Red White and Blue Oreos:

  • Taking Apart Oreo – If you are adding a stick to the Oreo, we recommend being very careful taking the Oreo apart. Oreos break easily so we try to be as gentle as possible.
  • Use Parchment Paper – To prevent the Oreo’s from sticking to the surface, make sure you line your surface with parchment paper.
  • Refrigerate Oreos – To make sure the chocolate sets on the Oreo, place in the refrigerator.

How to Store:

We recommend storing chocolate covered Oreos in an airtight container at room temperature. Place Oreos in a single layer then place a parchment paper between the layers for easy storing.

By using parchment paper, it is easy to grab a cookie and prevents them from sticking in the container.
