Ingredients

Ingredients to make this recipe.
  • Pineapple Chunks – Fresh gives the best flavor, but canned (in juice, drained) works great for a budget-friendly option
  • Strawberries – Choose ripe, red berries for the sweetest taste
  • Cantaloupe – Adds natural sweetness and helps stretch the salad affordably
  • Kiwis – Brings a bright, tangy flavor and pop of color
  • Mandarin Oranges – Use canned (drained) for convenience and savings
  • Limes & Lemons – Fresh juice gives the best flavor, but bottled works in a pinch
  • Honey – Adds natural sweetness—adjust based on how sweet your fruit is

How to Make Tropical Fruit Salad

Fresh kiwi, strawberries, cantaloupe, oranges, and pineapple sliced on a cutting board with a knife.

Step 1 – Clean and wash the fruit. I use this homemade fruit and vegetable wash. Then chop up each fruit individually into bite size pieces into large bowl.

Fresh cut up strawberries, kiwi, oranges, and cantaloupe mixed together in a bowl.

Step 2 – Combine the fruit in a large mixing bowl and set aside.

Step 3 – Pour honey into a small bowl. Squeeze the two limes and lemons into the bowl and mix well.

Step 4 – Pour the honey lime glaze over the fresh fruit and toss to coat.

Step 5 – Place in the fridge before serving.

How to Keep This Fruit Salad Budget-Friendly

  • Use fruit that is in season or on sale
  • Swap fresh berries for frozen (thawed and drained) if needed
  • Buy pre-cut fruit only if it’s marked down
  • Skip expensive fruits and double up on affordable ones like melon or oranges

Variations and Substitutions

  • Add grapes, mango, or blueberries
  • Use bottled lime juice in a pinch
  • Swap honey for maple syrup
  • Add Cool Whip for a creamy version
  • Skip citrus for a milder flavor (great for kids)

Serve it in a Fresh Pineapple

We served ours in a fresh pineapple so it would look amazing when guests come over.

  • Simply use the pineapple slicer so you are left with a whole pineapple.
  • Use a large serrated knife to cup the pineapple in half lengthwise.
  • I then use toothpicks to attach the top back onto the pineapple.
  • Fill it with fruit and let the fruit overflow on the pineapple for a beautiful way to serve your tropical fruit salad recipe.

How to Make Ahead

  • Make up to 24 hours in advance
  • Store dressing separately if prepping more than a day ahead
  • Toss again before serving

How to Store Leftovers

  • Store in an airtight container in the fridge
  • Best within 2–3 days
  • Stir before serving as juices settle

FAQs

Can I make fruit salad the night before?

Yes! It actually tastes better after sitting overnight because the honey lime dressing soaks into the fruit.

What fruit should not be used in fruit salad?

Avoid bananas and apples unless serving immediately—they brown quickly.

How do you keep fruit salad from getting soggy?

Use firm fruits and don’t overdress. Add delicate fruits right before serving if needed.

Can I freeze fruit salad?

Not recommended—fresh fruit loses texture when thawed.
