Why Make Blackberry Cobbler

  • Easy to Prepare – Super easy and beginner-friendly. Even if you are not a baker, you can still make this classic southern dish.
  • Summer Berries – Using fresh berries to make this homemade cobbler gives it the best flavor and delicious taste.
  • Simple Ingredients – You probably have all the ingredients need to make this easy blackberry cobbler recipe.

Ingredients

Several clear bowls containing baking ingredients for a delicious Blackberry Cobbler—blackberries, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, milk, and butter—are arranged on a light gray surface.
  • Melted Butter – We used unsalted butter
  • Milk – We like to use whole milk
  • All Purpose Flour – Use gluten-free flour for an easy substitute
  • Granulated Sugar – Adds a hint of sweetness

How to Make Blackberry Cobbler

  • Step 1 – Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and spray a 9X9 or 3 quart baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
A glass bowl lined with white paper towels holds fresh blackberries, perfect for a blackberry dessert. The bowl sits on a light gray surface next to a folded, striped cloth.

Step 2 – Wash the blackberries and pat them dry.

A glass bowl with flour and melted butter being mixed with a whisk sits on a light surface next to a blue-and-white striped kitchen towel—the first step in preparing a homemade Blackberry Cobbler.

Step 3 – In a large bowl, stir together the butter, milk, all purpose flour, 1 cup granulated sugar, baking powder and salt until combined.

Step 4 – Pour this mixture into the prepared baking dish.

A hand sprinkles sugar from a small glass bowl over fresh blackberries in a square baking dish of batter, preparing a delicious Blackberry Cobbler. A striped towel lies nearby on a light textured surface.

Step 5 – Sprinkle the blackberries evenly on top (they will sink in).  Top the berries with the coarse sugar.

  • Step 6 – Bake for 40-50 minutes until the batter is cooked through and lightly golden brown.
  • Step 7 – Serve warm topped with vanilla ice and enjoy!

Recipe Tips

  • Rich Flavor – This cobbler is pretty rich. If you want a less rich cobbler, reduce the butter amount to ¼ cup.
  • Cooking Time – Watch the cobbler closely as it cooks and if the top is getting too brown, loosely tent the top of the cobbler with foil to stop the top from burning.
  • Watery Cobbler – Baking cobbler a little longer could help thicken the texture. Make sure no excessive water is adding when mixing in the blackberries as this could cause the cobbler to be watery. You can also toss the berries with cornstarch if you prefer.

Variations and Additions

  • Pie Crust – For a delicious variation, add a premade pie crust dough and skip the biscuit topping.
  • Additions – If you prefer, you can add in a teaspoon of ground cinnamon or vanilla extract to the blackberry mixture. For a hint of lemon flavor, add in lemon zest or lemon juice.
  • Change the Fruit – Try it with peach, strawberries, cherries, raspberries and blueberries.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Difference between Blackberry Cobbler and Crumble?

The main difference is the topping. Cobbler has a biscuit or a cake like topping. Crumble has a oat-based topping.

Can I Use Canned Blackberries?

Yes, you can use canned blackberries but make sure to drain the juices from the blackberries before adding to the mixture. You may need to reduce the sugar as the blackberries in the can has added sugar. Feel free to also use frozen blackberries. You may want to thaw them before adding them as it could cause the cobbler to be watery.

Can I Bake Cobbler in a Cast Iron Skillet?

Yes, we think that is a great option as it gives the crust a crispy texture.
