Easy Granola Recipe:

There are so many options at the store when it comes to granola. It actually is overwhelming and honestly a lot of them are loaded with ingredients that are not necessary.

I was looking for a easy basic granola recipe that I can add in different nuts or dried fruits in. This is just that. I love that you can coat your oats with different sweeteners to make it just right with basic ingredients.

Granola is great by itself or to top my yogurt in the morning. I just feel better eating something wholesome with not a lot of added ingredients that I can’t pronounce.

What is Granola?

Granola is a great snack or breakfast option. It is usually started off with rolled oats and other added ingredients such as honey, dried fruit and nuts or seeds. Then it is baked until it is golden brown and has a crispy, crunchy texture.

Granola is great by the handful or you can put it in your cereal or yogurt. There are so many different ways you can make granola and that is probably my favorite part.

Is it cheaper to make your own Granola?

Yes it is cheaper to make your own Granola. My favorite part is it is healthier and taste better than the store bought granola. You will be amazed how easy this recipe is.

I always thought making granola was time consuming but I come to realize how easy it is to make. I make time on the weekends to make a big batch for the week. It makes for the perfect breakfast with my coffee or an afternoon snack.

Variations:

Homemade Granola is a great recipe to change or add different ingredients as to what your family likes. Here are some of ours:

  • Add in Nuts – You can mix in any types of nuts that you prefer. Slice almonds or Cashews are my favorite.
  • Mix in Dried Fruit – You can also mix in any type of dried fruit such as dried apricot, dried apples or dried pineapple. Dried Cranberries is also one of my favorites to add.
  • Stir in Seeds – Sunflower seeds and Chia Seeds is another ingredient that I always add in.
  • Add in Chocolate – M&M and Chocolate Chips are a must especially for the kids.
  • Sweetener Options – Brown Sugar or Maple Syrup is a great option to make it sweeter.
  • Gluten Free – Check the ingredients before adding to your granola but you can purchase gluten free oats.

Do you want Chunky Granola?

If you are a fan of big chunky granola, then here are some tips to help with that.

  • Cook Oats Together – This is the key in getting that chunky granola. You want your granola to be a little crowded but still far apart so all the granola cooks.
  • Line your pan – Always make sure to line your pan with parchment paper. This way the honey sticks to the oats and not your pan.
  • Press your oats – If you do stir about half way through the baking process, right before I put the oats back in I take a spatula and gently press on the granola. This helps make sure everything is sticking together.
  • Bake until golden – You want your granola to be the right shade of golden brown.
  • Let Cool – Make sure you let the granola cool completely. The granola continues to crisp while it is cooling.

How to store Homemade Granola:

Store the leftovers in an air tight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. I usually have a specific jar so my family knows to grab a handful for a snack or as they are heading out the door.

Homemade Granola is a great idea for a gift for a neighbor or your kids teacher. Just place in a cellophane bag and tie a bow around for the perfect gift.

Why is my Homemade Granola not crunchy?

If you find that your Homemade Granola is not crunchy, try lowering your temperature on your oven. If you cook at high temperature the nuts and oats could burn prior to drying out.

You can also stir about half way through the cooking time to ensure that everything is coated and cooking all sides.

How do you know when Homemade Granola is done?

It is usually done when the outer edges of the granola have started turning golden brown. Once the majority of the oats have turned that golden brown, I take it out of the oven and let it rest and cool.

Then I add in my raisins and enjoy Homemade Granola.
