Ingredients
For the Onion

- Sweet Onions – It’s important to use large Sweet onions like Vidalia Onions for the best flavor of this recipe.
- All Purpose Flour – Helps to create a crispy texture
- Cayenne Pepper – Adds a hint of spice
- Paprika – For a smoky flavor, use smoked paprika
- Garlic Powder – See The Best Garlic Powder Substitute
- Dried Oregano – If you are out, use Italian Seasoning
- Milk – We used whole milk
- Large Eggs – Binds the ingredients
- Vegetable Oil – Feel free to use other types of oil
For this Sauce

- Mayonnaise – This base ingredient to the sauce
- Ketchup – Use store bought or make Easy Homemade Ketchup Recipe
- Horseradish – If you are out use Dijon Mustard
- Paprika – See Best Paprika Substitute
- Cayenne Pepper – Adds a hint of spice
- Oregano – You can also use Italian Seasoning Recipe

How to Make Bloomin Onion

Step 1 – Mix together the sauce ingredients in a small bowl. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Step 2 – Cut off the top of the onion and peel the outer skin from the onions with a sharp knife.

Step 3 – Place the onions on a cutting board, cut side down. Cut half inch, vertical cuts petal all around the onions. Turn the onions over and gently separate the layers of the petals of the onions.

Step 4 – In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder, oregano, salt and black pepper.

Step 5 – In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs with the milk until well combined.

Step 6 – Dredge each onion in the seasoned flour mixture making sure that the flour mixture gets between the nooks and petal layers.

Step 7 – Dip the floured onion in the wet ingredients making sure that the milk and egg mixture get coated onto the entire onion. Gently separate the petals while coating it to make sure that it gets between each layer.

Step 8 – Dip the onions in the flour mixture again making sure that a 2nd layer of flour has well coated the onions.

Step 9 – In a deep fryer, large stock pot or dutch oven, heat the vegetable oil to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure that the amount of vegetable oil in your pan or deep fryer is enough to cover the entire onion. Using a metal slotted spoon, wire skimmer or spatula, carefully layer one of the onions into the hot oil (root side down). Fry for approximately 5-7 minutes until the onion is golden brown and crispy.

Step 10 – Serve the onions with the refrigerate onion sauce and enjoy!

- ¼ teaspoon Salt
- ½ teaspoon Black Pepper

- Using a metal slotted spoon or spatula, carefully layer one of the onions into the oil (root side down).
- Fry for approximately 5-7 minutes until the onion is golden brown and crispy. Carefully remove from the onion to a plated lined with paper towels to soak up the excess oil.
- Continue this process with the 2nd onion.

- Coated Onions – When coating the onions, use your fingers to gently separate the onion petals so that each petal gets evenly coated but be careful so that they don’t fall off.
- Heating the oil – Make sure that the oil comes to temperature (375 degrees F) after frying the 1st onion before frying the 2nd onion to ensure that the battered onion cooks evenly. For best results use a deep pot.
- Double Dip – Flour then egg then flour gives the crispiest Blooming Onion.
- Drain Well – Place on paper towels to remove excess oil.

To cut the petals of the onions, I find that it’s best to make 4 evenly spaced cuts around each of the onions approximately ½ inch from the root of the onion making sure to cut down all the way through. Yes! It won’t be as crispy but still delicious. Air fry at 375°F for 15–18 minutes in the air fryer basket. Bake at 375 degrees on a baking sheet for 20 minutes. You can also broil for a few minutes towards end of cooking time.
Yes! Cut the onion earlier and keep it chilled in an airtight container. Then place in the batter right before frying.
These are best served fresh but you can refrigerate any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Reheat in the air fryer or oven to make the coating crispy again with enjoying the leftovers.
