The Best Allspice Substitute:

If you are making a recipe that calls for allspice and realize you are out, these substitutes will help replace it. Allspice is not a mixed spice like pumpkin spice, it is actually a berry.

The flavor of Allspice is a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. It is a berry that grows in Mexico and Jamaica and is a must spice Caribbean cuisine and making Jamaican Jerky.

The best substitute is to make your own. If you have cinnamon, nutmeg and clove then you can make your own. The three of these spice combination is what can easily replace it.

Easy Substitute for Allspice:

Besides homemade allspice, if you have pumpkin pie spice leftover from all your fall desserts, use it as an easy substitute. It is a great substitute if you are making a sweet dessert.

If you are making a savory dish, use ground black pepper as a substitute. You will use black pepper in addition to pumpkin pie spice. Add a quarter of teaspoon of black pepper to the pumpkin pie spice.

1. Homemade Allspice:

Homemade Allspice is easy to make. Remember when you are mixing these three ingredients together, you are trying to replace the complex flavor of Allspice. When mixing nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove together in a small bowl you want to use the ground version.

To mix allspice use the following measurements of ground spices. You may need to use a spice grinder:

  • 3.5 teaspoons of ground cinnamon
  • 1.5 teaspoons of ground nutmeg
  • Quarter of teaspoon of ground clove

After mixing these ingredients together you can easily store in a jar to use when you are out.

  • Substitute 1 teaspoon of homemade allspice for 1 teaspoon of allspice

2. Cinnamon:

Cinnamon is probably the most common substitute for Allspice. It is a pantry staple in our house and it has a very similar flavor as Allspice. It’s warmth, earthy, sweet flavors makes the best substitute. It is great in your sweet and savory recipes.

  • Substitute 1 teaspoon of cinnamon for 1 teaspoon of allspice

Since cinnamon doesn’t have that peppery bite, then you probably will need to add some ground pepper for your savory dishes.

3. Pumpkin Spice Mix:

Pumpkin spice is a good substitute for all those fall desserts. It is the perfect substitute for all your baked goods. Pumpkin spice has a lot of the same flavors in its blend that you taste in Allspice. So equal amount substitution will work the best.

  • Substitute 1 Teaspoon of Pumpkin Spice Mix with 1 teaspoon of Allspice

4. Cloves:

Cloves are a great replacement for Allspice because of its clove flavor. You can use it in your savory or sweet dishes.

Use whole dry cloves in place of allspice berries or use ground cloves for ground allspice. Cloves has a bitter taste so the substitution amount will be less than what your recipes calls for allspice.

Add cloves in your sweet dishes will add a sweet, warmth flavor. If you need it for savory dishes, you may need to add some black pepper to give it that bite.
