My kids are convinced these taste exactly like McDonald’s and honestly after making them this many times I have to agree! The texture is perfectly light and fluffy and they disappear off the plate faster than I can stack them. We do the sprinkles and whipped cream version for birthdays and it has become one of our favorite breakfast traditions.

Ingredients

Ingredients for recipe: salt, sugar, oil, flour, eggs, milk and baking powder.
  • All purpose flour — the base of the batter. Measure by spooning into the measuring cup and leveling off — too much flour makes dense flat pancakes
  • Baking powder — gives the pancakes their signature rise and fluffy texture. Make sure yours is fresh. Old baking powder makes flat pancakes
  • Salt — a small amount that balances the sweetness and brings out all the other flavors
  • Granulated sugar — adds just a hint of sweetness that makes these taste like the real McDonald’s version
  • Eggs — bind the batter together and add richness. Use large eggs at room temperature for the best result
  • Milk — creates the pourable batter consistency. Whole milk gives the richest flavor but 2% also works
  • Vegetable oil — keeps the pancakes moist and tender. Any neutral oil works as a substitute

How to Make McDonald’s Pancakes

Combining the ingredients in a bowl with a whisk.

Step 1 – Combine all the ingredients. Stir all the ingredients together in a large mixing bowl by hand using a wire whisk until just combined.  Be careful not to over mix the pancake batter.

Pancake batter poured into a large skillet.

Step 2 – Prepare the griddle or frying pan. Preheat a griddle, cast iron skillet or non stick skillet over medium heat.  Grease with a non-stick canola oil cooking spray or a small amount of butter. Add the batter to the pan in approximately ¼ cups of the batter.

Step 3 – Cook the pancakes. Cook for 2-3 minutes until small bubbles start to appear at the top of the pancake.  Flip the pancake and finish cooking for approximately 2 more minutes until golden brown.

Step 4 – Place the pancakes on a plate. Transfer the pancake to a plate and continue this process until all the batter is used.

Step 5 – Serve warm and enjoy. Then serve warm topped with your favorite pancake toppings and enjoy!

Tips for Success

  • Do not overmix. This is the single most important tip. Stir just until the ingredients are combined and stop. Lumps in the batter are your friend and mean fluffy pancakes are coming
  • Let the batter rest. Allow the batter to sit for 3–5 minutes before cooking. This gives the baking powder time to activate and makes the pancakes even fluffier
  • Wait for the bubbles. Do not flip until bubbles form across the entire surface and the edges look set. Flipping too early gives you a raw center
  • Keep the heat at medium. High heat burns the outside before the inside cooks through. Medium heat gives you that perfect golden brown color all the way to the edges
  • Grease between batches. The pan gets drier as you cook — add a light spray of cooking spray or a tiny bit of butter between each batch for consistently golden pancakes

Topping Ideas

  • Maple syrup — the classic. Pure maple syrup for the best flavor
  • Flavored syrup — blueberry, strawberry, and butter pecan are all family favorites
  • Butter — melt right on top of a warm stack for that classic diner experience
  • Whipped cream and sprinkles — our favorite birthday morning tradition in a house with 8 kids
  • Fresh fruit — sliced strawberries, blueberries, or bananas add color and freshness
  • Powdered sugar — a simple dusting over the top that looks beautiful on the plate
  • Strawberry Sauce — drizzled over the top for a special weekend treat
  • Chocolate Sauce — for the chocolate lovers at the table

What to Serve with Pancakes

  • Bacon. I love to cook bacon in the oven. This saves so much time and the bacon is crispy and delicious.
  • Fresh Fruit. Prepare a large bowl of diced fruit that is in season.
  • Sausage. Pancakes taste great with sausage links, patties or even sausage balls.
  • Eggs. You can prepare the eggs the way you love best. We like fried or scrambled.

Storage and Freezer Instructions

Refrigerator

  • Store in an airtight container for up to 5-7 days

Freezer

  • Let pancakes cool completely then freeze in a single layer on a baking sheet. Once frozen, transfer to a freezer-safe bag with parchment paper between each pancake and freeze for up to 3 months. See our full Can You Freeze Pancakes guide for even more tips

Reheating

  • Microwave for 30–60 seconds or pop in the toaster for a crispier result. The toaster is our favorite method for getting that slightly golden edge back

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my pancakes flat?

The most common reasons are old baking powder, overmixing the batter, or too much flour. Always use fresh baking powder, stir just until combined, and measure flour by spooning into the cup rather than scooping.

Can I make the batter ahead of time?

Yes! Make the batter the night before and refrigerate covered. Give it a gentle stir before cooking and add a splash of milk if it has thickened overnight.

Do these really taste like McDonald’s pancakes?

Yes! The combination of a simple batter with just enough sugar and the right ratio of baking powder gives you that signature light fluffy McDonald’s texture. My kids are convinced every single time.

Can I use buttermilk instead of regular milk?

Yes! Buttermilk gives the pancakes a slightly tangy flavor and makes them even fluffier. Reduce the baking powder slightly and add ½ teaspoon of baking soda when using buttermilk.

How do I keep pancakes warm while cooking the whole batch?

Place finished pancakes on a baking sheet in a 200°F oven while you cook the remaining batter. They stay warm and fluffy without getting soggy.

OMG IT TASTE JUST LIKE MCDONALD’S PANCAKES

  14. Izz says:

Can I mix these ahead of time? Or will the baking powder go flat?

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

You can make the batter ahead of time and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. The batter will thicken as it’s refrigerated so I recommend adding a splash of milk and whisking the batter before making the pancakes.

  15. Donna says:

Is it 2 tbsp of baking powder or 2 tsp of baking powder?

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

It’s Tablespoons – I know it seems like a lot but trust me – It makes these pancakes light and fluffy. I hope you try it out!
