Copycat P. F. Changs Crispy Honey Chicken Recipe:

This PF Changs Crispy Honey Chicken Recipe is a family favorite recipe. This sweet, sticky and crispy chicken is delicious and easy to make. You will love the crispy texture and juicy center of this chicken.

This copycat recipe is one that we make often. The chicken is seasoned with simple pantry ingredients and then dipped in buttermilk. Add the chicken to a hot skillet and fry for a few minutes.

Heat the sauce and chicken together to make a delicious honey chicken recipe. The honey sauce takes the chicken to the next level. Add your favorite sides for a delicious recipe.

Ingredients needed - chicken, flour, cumin, chili powder, coriander, onion powder, salt, pepper, buttermilk, oil, honey, corn syrup, soy sauce, red pepper flakes, green onions, sesame seeds

Ingredients: 

For the Chicken: 

  • Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts (cut into 1 inch pieces)
  • All Purpose Flour 
  • Cumin 
  • Chili Powder 
  • Ground Coriander 
  • Onion Powder 
  • Salt 
  • Black Pepper 
  • Buttermilk 
  • Vegetable Oil (for frying) 

For the Honey Sauce: 

  • Honey
  • Light Corn Syrup 
  • Soy Sauce 
  • Pinch of Red Pepper Flakes (optional) 

Topping: 

  • Green Onions (chopped) 
  • Sesame Seeds 

How to Make Honey Crispy Chicken: 

  • Step 1 – Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or stock pot until it’s about 2-3 inches deep in the pan. 
  • Step 2 – Heat over medium heat until the oil reaches 350 degrees F.  Measure the oil temperature of the oil with a meat thermometer and make sure that the oil doesn’t get too hot. 
  • Step 3 – In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cumin, chili powder, coriander, onion powder, salt and pepper.  Pour the buttermilk in a separate bowl.

  • Step 4 – Dip the chicken pieces in the flour, then dip them in the buttermilk and then dip them back into the flour mixture.  Gently tap the excess flour off of the chicken.

  • Step 5 – Then add the coated chicken to the hot oil.  Fry the chicken for 5-7 minutes until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees F and is golden brown. 
  • Step 6 – Remove the chicken from the oil and place the chicken on a plate lined with paper towels to soak up the excess oil. Continue this process until all the chicken is cooked and coated through. 
  • Step 7 – In a large skillet, add the honey sauce ingredients.  Whisk to combine all the ingredients.  Bring the mixture to a low simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes until the mixture is bubbly.

  • Step 8 – Remove the pan from the heat. Then add the chicken to the skillet.  Toss the chicken to coat it with the honey sauce. 
  • Step 9 – Top with the sesame seed and diced green onions.  Serve warm and enjoy.

When we make this crispy honey chicken we keep sides simple. These are some of our favorites.

  • White Rice

Tips for Crispy Honey Chicken PF Changs Recipe:

  • Heating Oil – Make sure to not overheat the oil or the outside of the chicken will burn before the inside is cooked all the way through. Also heat at the highest heat setting otherwise it will splatter.
  • Adding Chicken to Skillet – Also, make sure not to add too many pieces of chicken to the oil or it will drop the temperature of the oil in the pan.
  • Orange Chicken – This recipe has a similar taste to the orange chicken. The sweetness honey and soy sauce makes this recipe easy to make.
  • Frying chicken – For an extra crispy texture on the chicken, we recommend double frying it.

Substitutions and Additions:

  • Add Vegetables – Once the chicken and covered with the sauce, you can easily add in vegetables. It completes the meal and makes it more filling.
  • Chicken – We used chicken breast but you can use boneless chicken thighs or chicken tenders.
  • Spicy Sauce – If you love a little extra spice, feel free to add add in chili flakes or sriracha sauce.

How to Store:

Refrigerate the leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days. This is great recipe to prepare and make for the week and store in individual containers.

Can I Use Chicken Thighs for this Recipe?

Yes, you can use chicken thighs in this recipe. Make sure to dice up about the same size so the chicken cooks evenly.

Can I Make this Recipe in the Air Fryer?

We have not made this recipe in the air fryer but you can definitely try one of these recipes to cook the chicken.
