How to Thicken Potato Soup:

Thick Potato Soup is the best comfort when the Fall Weather hits. We love to load this creamy soup with cheese, green onions and bacon. But there are times that my potato soup doesn’t get thicken enough.

We have gathered 8 different ways to quickly and easily thicken your potato soup. These helpful tips will avoid a soupy mess when you are trying to serve a thick bowl of potato soup.

What is Potato Soup?

Potato soup is a family favorite. It is a simple soup that can consist of just potato, milk and butter. This thick and creamy, chunky soup can also consist of other types of vegetables, seasoning and meat.

Potato soup can be made in the crock pot or a large pot on the stove. We like to combine the ingredients and simmer on medium high heat. This quick and easy soup satisfies all my soup cravings.

Why is My Potato Soup not Thickening?

The main reason your potato is not thickening is that it needs a heavier dairy product. Potato soup is cooked in a milk and chicken broth soup but heavy cream may need to be added.

If your recipe calls for whole milk, mix in heavy cream instead or do half milk and have heavy cream.

How to Thicken up Potato Soup:

These 8 options listed will give you options to thicken up your potato soup.

Using one or more of these options while you are cooking, will help in thickening your soup to your desired consistency.

1. How to Thicken Potato Soup with Flour:

Using flour to thicken soup is a classic way to add thickness to your soup. Keep in mind if your are on a gluten-free or low carb diet you may need to choose a different option.

To mix in flour to the soup, in a small bowl add 1 tablespoon of flour to 2 tablespoons of the soup. Whisk together until completely combine. Pour this mixture into the soup and heat for a few minutes.

Make sure to not add to much butter and flour as you do not want it to affect the taste of the soup.

2. How to Use Potato Starch to Thicken Potato Soup:

Potato Starch is an excellent option to thicken the soup. It is perfect for those following a keto diet as it is gluten-free. We love this option because it doesn’t change the potato flavor.

Mix 1 Cup of Water to 5 tablespoons of potato starch. Mix together in a separate bowl and add slowly to the soup. This option absorbs moisture quickly so it is important to add into the soup slowly.

3. How to Thicken Potato Soup with Potatoes:

This is a traditional way to thicken potato soup. Simply remove some of the potatoes from your soup or you use freshly boiled potatoes. Mash the potatoes in a bowl and add milk, softened butter and salt and pepper to make a paste. Then add potatoes back into the soup.

6. How to Make Potato Soup thicker with Corn flour:

Corn flour is similar to regular flour. It quickly thickens when added to the soup, so make sure to add it in slowly. Mix 1 tablespoon with 2 tablespoon with water until completely mixed.

Make sure the consistency is thin but not watery.

7. Stir in Bread:

Stale bread is a great option to stir in the potato soup. Break up pieces of plain bread and mix in the pot of soup stirring occasionally. Make sure to soak bread first and then stir in.
