If you have made our Crab Rangoon then you are going to love these Cream Cheese Wontons. The crispy edges and creamy filling makes this a must anytime we go to our local Asian restaurant. Now we make them at home so we can control the ingredients and we think they taste better.

These step-by-step instructions will have you enjoying this appetizer for your next family gathering!

Why You’ll Love Cream Cheese Wontons

My family loves when I make their favorite restaurant dishes at home. These homemade cream cheese wontons are so addicting and taste fresher than the ones at the restaurant.

All it takes is a simple mix of cream cheese, green onion, and a hint of onion then this gets tucked into store-bought wrappers, then fried for a crispy texture.

Dip them in sweet chili sauce, soy, or your favorite dipping sauce for the perfect appetizer everyone fights over.

Ingredients

Ingredients - cream cheese, wonton wrappers, vegetable oil, chopped green onions, salt, onion powder, powdered sugar
  • Cream Cheese – Make sure to softened cream cheese to easily combine ingredients
  • Powdered Sugar – Adds a hint of sweetness

  • Oil for Frying – Use vegetable oil or any type of high smoke oil

How to Make Cream Cheese Wontons

Step 1 – Place the cream cheese, powdered sugar, onion powder, salt and green onions in a small bowl. Stir to combine.

Step 2 – Preheat approximately 4 inches of vegetable oil in a large pan over medium high heat on the stove top until the oil reaches 325 degrees F.

Step 3 – Then assemble the rangoons by placing approximately 1-2 teaspoons of the cream cheese mixture into the center of each wonton wrapper. Dab the edges of each wrapper with a small amount of water. Fold up each opposite corner of the wrappers to the center and pinch all the corners together to form a square.

Step 4 – Drop the wontons into the oil and fry for 2-3 minutes until golden brown in a single layer.  Turn them as needed to make sure they are evenly browned.  Fry in batches so you do not crowd the pan. I usually fry 5-6 at a time.

Step 5 – Remove the cooked wontons from the oil with a slotted spoon and place on a plate lined with paper towels. Continue this process until all the rangoons are fried.

Step 6 – Serve while warm with your favorite dipping sauces and enjoy.

Recipe Notes

In order to bake the Cream Cheese Wontons instead of frying, bake it at 400 degrees F for 12-15 minutes until they are lightly browned.
Make sure to watch the oil while frying and monitor the temperature, if the oil gets over 370 degrees F, the wonton wrapper will likely burn.
Make sure to securely pinch together the corners of the wonton papers so they do not come apart while cooking.

What to Serve with Cream Cheese Wontons

These cream cheese wontons make a delicious appetizer. We love to serve with our favorite dipping sauce such as sweet chili sauce, sweet and sour sauce, Thai sweet chili sauce, or soy sauce.

If we are serving as a main dish recipe, add Kung Pao Chicken with a side of Hibachi Fried Rice for a complete meal idea. You may also love Egg Roll in a Bowl.

FAQs

Are Cream Cheese Wontons the same as Rangoons?

They both have the same creamy filling and crispy, fried exterior. But rangoons are made with crab meat.

Where do I Find Wonton Wrappers at the Grocery Store?

The wonton wrappers are usually located in the produce section at your local grocery store.

Why did my Wontons Fall Apart?

It is possible that the enough water was not used to seal the edges of the wonton wrappers. Make sure to pinch the edges completely to keep the wontons from falling apart.

Storage and Reheating Tips

  • Fridge – Store the leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
  • Freezer – You can freeze cream cheese wontons uncooked or cooked. I like to place the cream cheese wontons on a baking sheet pan and place in the freezer. Freeze for about an hour and then place in a freezer bag for up to 3 months. This will allow you to take out individual servings.
  • Reheating – Reheat the leftovers in the air fryer at 350 degrees for about 3 minutes to re-crisp the edges in a air fry basket. You can reheat in the microwave but the outside will be softened.
