  • Mini Marshmallows – At the end of cooking time, feel free top the mixture with mini marshmallows. This makes the perfect Thanksgiving side dish with roasted turkey.
  • Flavor – Feel free to change the seasoning to what you prefer. You can easily add in a teaspoons vanilla extract, orange juice, or maple syrup. Honey or molasses can also be substituted for the brown sugar.

How to Make Crock Pot Candied Yams

Step 1 – Add Yams – Place yams into the slow cooker

Step 2 – Combine Ingredients – In a small bowl mix together the brown sugar, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Step 3 – Season Yams – Sprinkle over the yams.

Step 4 – Top with Butter – Slice the butter and place slices over the yams. Butter and brown sugar is the perfect combination.

  • Step 5 – Cover and Cook – Now cover the slow cooker, and set on low.
  • Step 6 – Cook on Low – Let the candied yams cook 3 hours.
  • Step 7 – Stir – Be sure to stir halfway in the slow cooking process.

  • Cutting Yams – When cutting the yams, make sure to slice them about the same size. This allows them to cook evenly.
  • Stirring – After the yams are finished cooking, gently stir the mixture with a spoon. Making sure that you do not break the yams up.
  • Cooking Candied Yams – We recommend cooking the candied yams on low for 3 hours. But you can cook on high for about an hour. Just check to see if done by poking with a fork.

How to Prepare Sweet Potatoes

Picking out sweet potatoes is easy to do. I try to get sweet potatoes that are about the same size so they will be easy to slice. Peel the potatoes with a vegetable peeler and then slice into chunks.

Can I Make in the Oven?

Yes, you can still make this classic side dish in the oven. Prepare the yams as indicated on the recipe card then place in a casserole dish. Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes.

If your yams are fork tender at the end of cooking time, then they are finished cooking. This sweet potato recipes are just as delicious in the oven.
