Sweet potato casserole is a classic side dish that we serve for Thanksgiving and Christmas. But one year we decided to change things up and make these Hasselback Sweet Potatoes and they were a hit. Making them in the air fryer feed up oven space and they turned out delicious.

Hasselback potatoes are a famous side dish in Sweden. Potatoes are thinly sliced at the top while keeping the base attached. They are then baked and served with a variety of toppings.

We usually serve as a side dish but can also be served as a main dish recipe.

How to Cut Hasselback Sweet Potatoes

Cutting sweet potatoes to make them into the famous Hasselback side dish is easy with these simple steps.

  • Wash and dry a medium side sweet potato and place on a cutting board.
  • Place wood skewers or chop sticks on either side of the potato to prevent cutting through the entire sweet potato.
  • Begin cutting sweet potato into thin slices about ⅛ inch thick. Cut through to almost the bottom of the sweet potato.
  • Place in a baking dish to prepare for baking.

  • Unsalted Butter – Melt butter
  • Pure Maple Syrup – You can also use honey

  • Step 1 – Preheat the air fryer to 375°F.
  • Step 2 – Slice each sweet potato crosswise at 1/8-inch intervals, stopping about ¼ inch from the bottom to keep the potato intact.

  • Step 3 – In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, maple syrup, cinnamon, salt, and black pepper.
  • Step 4 – Place the sweet potatoes in the air fryer basket, cut-side up. Brush the butter mixture generously over the top and between the slices of each potato.

  • Step 5 – Air fry the sweet potatoes for 25-30 minutes, or until tender and crisp around the edges. Brush the potatoes with the remaining butter mixture halfway through cooking.
  • Step 6 – Remove the sweet potatoes from the air fryer and transfer them to a serving platter. Sprinkle chopped pecans over the top, if desired.

  • Cook Quicker – If you are short on time, you can microwave the sweet potato wrapped in paper towel for about 5 minutes. Then place in the air fryer to continue cooking for about 10 minutes.
