We love this copycat recipe for Panda Express String Bean Chicken Recipe. The taste is like the fast food Asian restaurant recipe, but we think it taste better.

This quick weeknight meal comes together with easy ingredients. The chicken and string green beans stir fry’s together for an amazing full of flavor meal.

Soy sauce and sesame oil are combined with other simple ingredients to cook the tender chicken and string beans. Now you can make this String Bean chicken at home. It will save you time and money.

What is the difference between String Beans and Green Beans?

There really isn’t much difference in String Beans and Green Beans. Green beans are a little thinner in shape. With this recipe, you can use either one.

Use what you have and this recipe will still full of flavor.

Ingredients needed - chicken breast, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, shaoxing rice wine, chicken broth, vegetable oil, string beans, minced garlic

Ingredients:

For the Chicken Marinade:

  • Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts, Thinly Sliced
  • Hoisin Sauce
  • Soy Sauce
  • Sesame Oil
  • Cornstach
  • Shaoxing Rice Wine (or Dry Sherry)

For the Sauce and Green Beans:

  • Chicken Broth
  • Soy Sauce
  • Sesame Oil (See The Best Sesame Oil Substitute)
  • Cornstarch
  • Vegetable Oil, divided
  • String Beans (ended trimmed and cut in half)
  • Minced Garlic
  • Shaoxing White Wine (or Dry Sherry)

How to Make String Bean Chicken Panda Express at Home:

  • Combine Chicken and Marinade Ingredients – Add all the chicken and marinade ingredients into a medium size bowl and stir to thoroughly combine all the ingredients and make sure that the chicken is completely covered in the sauce.
  • Marinade Chicken – Allow the chicken to marinade for at least 30 minutes or you can marinade overnight in the refrigerator.

  • Mix Together – Make the sauce by stirring together the chicken broth, soy sauce, sesame oil and the cornstarch. Then set the ingredients aside.
  • Cook Chicken – Heat a large skillet or wok over medium high heat until the pan is hot. Add in 1 Tbsp of the vegetable Oil. Then added in the marinaded chicken and cook until the chicken is golden brown on both sides.
  • Once Chicken is Cooked – Move the chicken to a separate plate or bowl. Leave any remaining oil in your pan.
  • Cook String Green Beans – Then add in the remaining vegetable oil to your pan and add in the green beans. Sauté the green beans for 1-2 minutes, then add in ¼ cup of the water to pan, cover and steam the green beans until they are tender (1-2 minutes).
  • Heat the Sauce – Uncover, add in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute or until the garlic is aromatic. Then add in the shaoxing wine to the pan and use it to de-glaze the pan. Then add in the sauce that you have set aside in step 2.
  • Let Sauce Simmer – Continue to heat and bring the mixture to a low simmer.

  • Add Chicken back to Pan – Stir and add the chicken back to the pan. Heat everything together for 30 seconds to allow the sauce ingredients to thicken.
  • Serve and Enjoy – Once the sauce is thick, serve warm and enjoy! You can also serve over rice if you prefer.

We like to serve standard Chinese Food sides with this recipe.

Sting Bean Chicken Recipe Tips:

  • Skillet Recommendation – If you have a Wok then we recommend using that, but if not an cast iron skillet is a great second option.
  • Heat Skillet – Before adding the ingredients to the skillet, make sure it is heated to medium high heat.
  • Crispier Ingredients – To ensure your chicken and string green beans are crispy, we recommend on cooking on high heat.
  • Marinading Chicken – We recommend marinading your chicken for at least 30 minutes or overnight. This helps your chicken to be full of flavor and juicy.

Is String Green Bean Chicken Healthy?

We love to recreate our favorite recipes not only does it save me time, but I can change the ingredients to make it healthier. The white meat, the green beans and the low sodium soy sauce makes for an amazing healthier meal.

Making it at home allows you to make it gluten free and lower carbs. We love the fact that it is quick and easy. I have even had my kids help make this meal.

Variation Ideas:

  • Change the Meat – You can use chicken thighs, beef, shrimp or pork.
  • Gluten Free – If you need it to be gluten free use liquid aminos or coconut aminos.
  • Spicy Option –   Use 1 to 2 teaspoons of hot chili oil, red pepper flakes, or jalapeno’s.
  • Add more vegetables – Use broccoli, carrots, red bell pepper, and zucchini.
  • Make it Vegetarian – You can skip the meat all together. Cook the vegetables in the sauce for an amazing vegetarian meal.
  • Add some Crunch – To add some crunch to this recipe, add in some chopped nuts or walnuts at the end of cooking.
  • Chicken marinade – For a sweeter marinade, you can add in some brown sugar.
  • Garlic and Ginger – Ginger can be added to the minced garlic to add flavor to the glaze. You can also add in some white onions.

How to Store Leftovers:

Refrigerate the leftovers in an air tight container for up to 5 days. You can easily reheat the leftovers in the microwave or on your stove top.

I usually will store in individual containers with some rice and it make a perfect lunch for my husband and I. We just reheat in the microwave and turns out great.

  • Uncover, add in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute or until the garlic is aromatic. Then add in the shaoxing wine to the pan and use it to de-glaze the pan. Then add in the sauce that you have set aside in step 2. Continue to heat and bring the mixture to a low simmer.
  • Stir and add the chicken back to the pan. Heat everything together for 30 seconds to allow the the sauce to thicken. Once the sauce is thick, serve warm and enjoy! You can also serve over rice if you prefer. Enjoy!
