Bear, onions, rolls, and raw brats, oil and seasoning
  • Raw Bratwursts – Get from meat market at the grocery store

Variations Ideas

  • Alcohol Free – These brats recipe can be made alcohol free by substituting the beer with chicken broth.
  • Buns – If you are serving these brats in buns, feel free to use hot dog buns.

How to Make Beer Brats

  • Step 1 – Preheat a grill over medium high heat. 
  • Step 2 – Add the beer, sliced onions, salt and pepper to a large pot or Dutch Oven.  Bring to a boil over high heat.

  • Step 3 – Then add the bratwurst to the pot. Reduce the heat down to low and cook for 10-12 minutes until the bratwurst are cooked through.

  • Step 4 – Remove the bratwurst from the pan and continue to cook the onions on low heat for another 10-12 minutes while grilling the bratwurst. 
  • Step 5 – Brush the grill grates with the olive oil to keep the bratwurst from sticking to the grates.  
  • Step 6 – Grill beer brats on the grill grates over direct heat.  Cook for 5-8 minutes, rotating every 2 minutes, until the bratwurst are browned on all sides.

  • Step 7 – Remove from the grill.  Serve on the buns topped with the onions, sauerkraut, ketchup and yellow mustard.  Enjoy! 

Recipe Tips

  • Simmer Brats – Allow the brats to cook in the beer with the onions. This gives the bratwurst so much flavor.
  • Cooking Time – Cooking time will vary. We love to place the brats on the grill to give it that char texture.

  • 2 teaspoons Black Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Salt

Recipe Notes

Refrigerate any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5-6 days.  
You can also pan fry the bratwurst in a large cast iron skillet instead of grilling them to brown them as well.
