Spaghetti sauce is easy to prepare and budget friendly. My family can have a warm, comforting meal on those busy nights.

How to Freeze Spaghetti Sauce?

Tomato-based sauce is the best sauce to freeze. Cream based pasta sauce doesn’t hold up in the freezer. They are best to place in the refrigerator to eat later in the week.

These steps will help you prepare your sauce so that it is frozen properly. Freezing food is so easy to do.

1. Allow Spaghetti Sauce to Completely Cool:

After preparing you sauce, make sure that you let it cool completely to room temperature before storing. But you don’t want to leave it out longer than 2 hours as bacteria can start forming.

2. Place in a freezer safe container:

After sauce has cooled, place in these different options for storing. Make sure you leave room, about 1 inch space for the sauce to expand when adding to the container.

When we adding the sauce to the containers or glass jars, I only add what I know how much family will eat. So I freeze family serving size, so I only take out what I need.

3. Freeze Spaghetti Sauce:

Once you have added the sauce to the containers then you are ready to freezer. It is that easy. I label my containers, so I know exactly what is in there and when I need to eat it by.

Yes, you can freeze spaghetti meat sauce. It doesn’t matter if it is ground beef, turkey or lamb it all freezes great. Even if you made meatballs with your sauce, just freeze with the sauce and it will turn out perfectly.

Thaw in the refrigerator overnight and heat the next day.

Can you freeze Spaghetti Sauce and Noodles?

Yes, you can freeze sauce and cooked pasta together. The important thing to do is make sure to cook the noodles al dente, meaning making sure they are slightly undercooked.

When adding the noodles to the water to boiling water to cook, we like to add in some olive oil so the noodles don’t stick.

They hold up better in the freezer and when you reheat your meal. If pasta cooks to long, it can get mushy.

What’s the best way to Freeze Spaghetti Sauce?

If you have a small portion of sauce that you are freezer, then we recommend putting in a freezer safe container. For larger quantity of sauce, make sure to cool completely and put in a freezer safe bag.

Then lay the freezer bag full of sauce on a baking sheet flat. Making sure all the air is out. Once frozen then you can remove the cooking sheet and place the flatten bag in the freezer.

This saves space in your freezer when you freeze it in a zip lock bag flat.

How long will Frozen Spaghetti Last?

Spaghetti sauce will last about 3 months in the freezer if it is stored properly. If store in the freezer longer, then it tends to get freezer burns. Make sure to label your containers so you can use at the appropriate time.

How to Reheat Spaghetti Sauce?

The best way to reheat spaghetti sauce is on your stovetop. When you are preparing to serve it, let freeze cooked sauce thaw out in the refrigerator overnight. Then pour the sauce in a sauce pan and heat on low for about 15 minutes.

Watch sauce closely as it could start bubbling in spots. Make sure every few minutes stir the sauce so that it is heated thoroughly.

You can also heat up in the microwave, but this take a while and it doesn’t seem to heat very well.

There are many ways you can use leftover spaghetti sauce. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Use Different Noodles – The first night we use spaghetti noodles then the next time we eat the sauce, we use rigatoni noodles.
  • Dipping Sauce – We love to use this sauce for dipping cheese sticks, pizza, or ravioli’s. It is the perfect sauce to use for snack night.
  • Use it for Lasagna – Make homemade lasagna, use the leftover sauce for your favorite lasagna recipe.

    Since it is just my husband and me, I have been freezing spaghetti sauce for a looooong time. It makes for a great quick meal. I use the two cup Ziploc containers and freeze 16 oz. in each one. I either put the container in the frig to defrost or occasionally MW it to defrost slightly. Then pour into a 3 qt Corningware container. I had the same amount of water and MW for a few minutes to bring it to a boil. In the meantime, I measure out 8 oz of pasta, usually egg noodles, sometimes other pasta. I add to the container and stir it in, MW for another 4-5 minutes, stir and repeat cooking for another 4-5 minutes. The pasta will absorb the liquid and be perfectly done. Stir in cheese, whatever kind you like, then cover to get the cheese to melt. Serve with a salad.
