Copycat Freddy’s patty melt recipe

I love to recreate our favorite meals so we can enjoy them at home. This Freddy’s Patty Melt is always a crowd pleaser and so easy to make. You are going to save time and money making this patty melt at home.

What is a Patty Melt?

It is a variation of the classic cheeseburger. The difference between a traditional cheeseburger and a patty melt is the bread.

A patty melt is served on sandwich bread and cooked on a griddle or skillet.

What’s on a Freddy’s patty melt?

This consists of a hamburger patty topped with swiss cheese and sautéed onions. It is sandwiched between 2 slices of rye bread. Everything comes together for the best skillet melt.

Ingredients for Freddy's patty melt.

Ingredients:

  • Slices Rye Bread
  • Ground Beef
  • White Onion, sliced
  • Butter
  • Swiss Cheese

How to make Freddy’s patty melt:

  • Step 1 – Make the patties. Divide the ground beef into 2 even balls (approximately 3 oz each). Then, butter one side of each piece of the Rye bread with 1 Tbsp of the butter.
  • Step 2 – Sauté the onions with melted butter. Then melt the remaining tablespoon butter in a large skillet (or cast iron pan) over medium high heat.  Then top the melted butter with the sliced onions.

Sauté the onions in the butter until they are caramelized (3-5 minutes).  Next, remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
  • Step 3 – Place the ground beef on the skillet over medium high heat.  Put a piece of parchment paper on top of the beef and use a spatula or a burger press to smash the meat into 2 thin patties.
  • Step 4 – Allow to cook. Let the patties cook until they are a deep goldened browned and crispy (2-3 minutes).  Then flip the patties over (do not smash) and cook the other side for 2-3 minutes until it is also browned and crispy.
  • Step 5 – Top with a slice of cheese. Place a piece of the Swiss cheese on each patty and allow it to melt.  Then remove the patties from the skillet once cheese is melted. Set aside.
  • Step 6 – Place the slices of bread in the skillet. Put the bread on the skillet butter side down and toast the bread.
  • Step 7 – Assemble the sandwich.  Place one piece of the bread on a plate (toasted side down), top with 1 of the patties, half of the fried onions, then the remaining patty, the rest of the fried onions and top with the 2nd piece of bread (toasted side on top).
  • Step 8 – Cut and serve. Cut in half and the patty melt is ready to serve and enjoy! You can season with salt and pepper if you prefer.

How to store:

These patty melts are best served fresh.  However, if you have leftovers, store them inside an airtight container in the fridge.

I recommend storing the onions, meat and bread separately. This will prevent it from getting soggy.

How to reheat:

Reheat the sandwich in the microwave until heated through. Another option is to reheat it in a skillet if you prefer it to be crispier.
