What's in this post: Funnel Cake
Why We Love Funnel Cake
Funnel Cake can easily be made with pantry ingredients for an easy deep-fried food. It takes minutes to prepare and the results is a delicious dessert that is perfect for sharing.
We love to top with chocolate sauce, strawberry sauce or caramel sauce with sprinkles or toppings of choice for the perfect dessert for any occasion.
Ingredients
- All Purpose Flour – Regular flour works best. Do not use self-rising flour
- Granulated Sugar – Gives the funnel cake a hint of sweetness
- Whole Milk – We recommend using whole milk for the best texture

How to Make Funnel Cake
Step 1 – Stir together the flour, sugar, baking soda and salt in a medium-sized bowl. Set aside.
Step 2 – In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the 2 cup milk, eggs and vanilla extract.
Step 3 – Slow pour the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and stir until the mixture is smooth.
Step 4 – Line the bottom of the saucepan or large Dutch Oven with approximately 2″ of vegetable oil. Heat on medium-high heat until the oil is approximately 375 degrees F.
Step 5 – Slowly drizzle approximately ½ cup of batter into the oil with a squeeze bottle. Swirl and criss-cross the batter across itself when adding to the oil. Fry each side of the funnel cake in the oil for 60-90 seconds until golden brown.
Step 6 – Remove from the oil and place on a plate lined with a paper towel to drain with tongs. Dust with powdered sugar immediately and serve warm. Repeat this process with the remaining batter until all the funnel cakes are formed.
Recipe Tips
- Candy Thermometer – Use a candy thermometer to make sure that the oil does not get too hot or the funnel cake will burn so watch the oil closely and adjust the temperature as needed.
- Serving Size – The batter makes approximately 4-6 cakes depending on the size of your funnel cakes.
- Making Funnel Cakes – You can use a funnel or a piping bag to drizzle the batter into the oil for frying if you prefer. If using a funnel, make sure that it’s well cleaned before using.
Serving Recommendations
We love to serve these funnel cakes with a dusting of powdered sugar. But another option is to combine ½ cup of sugar and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon in a bowl. Sprinkle this cinnamon sugar mixture over the top for a delicious variation.
Another delicious to serve Funnel Cakes is to drizzle chocolate syrup or caramel sauce. This makes a rich and delicious dessert. We have served with fresh fruit such as diced strawberries and blueberries with a scoop of Easy Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream Recipe.
Frequently Asked Questions
You can easily make funnel cake without a funnel cake by placing the funnel cake batter into a liquid measuring cup or a piping bag. Pour batter into thin layers of the batter into a large pot of hot oil. Allow the batter to be poured into circular and zig zag motion for the best funnel cake. This keeps the mess to a minimum and makes cleanup a breeze.
We recommend using a high smoke point neutral oil to fry funnel cake. We like using vegetable oil but you can also make it with canola oil or peanut oil.
Store the leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days in the refrigerator.
