The sauce that we use combines the flavors of Sesame oil, soy sauce and hoisin sauce. Chicken broth and other seasonings are added to flavor. Hoisin sauce is a thick dark colored sauce that is sweet and spicy.

Hoisin Sauce main ingredient is soybeans.

What is the Difference between Oyster Sauce and Hoisin Sauce?

Both of these sauces are used in most Asian dishes. Oyster sauce is made from oyster extract and has a salty flavoring. Hoisin is made with fermented soybean paste. It is more of a sweet flavoring with a hint of warm spices.

How to Make Hoisin Sauce Noodles with Chicken:

  • Step 1 – Cook Noodles – Cook the udon noodles based on the package instructions. Drain and rinse with cold water.  Set aside.
  • Step 2 – Combine Sauce Ingredients – Mix all the sauce ingredients together in a mixing bowl.
  • Step 3 – Cook Chicken – Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat.  Add the chicken and cook until the chicken starts to brown and is no longer pink.  Remove and set aside.
  • Step 4 – Cook Vegetables – Add the carrots and red bell pepper to the skillet and cook over medium high heat for 2-3 minutes until they are slightly tender.
  • Step 5 – Combine Ingredients – Add the chicken back to the skillet and toss in the noodles.  Pour the sauce on top and toss all the ingredients together to coat all the ingredients in the sauce.  Stir fry for 1-2 minutes until all the ingredients are heated through and covered in the sauce.
  • Step 6 – Serve and enjoy – Remove from heat and sprinkle the green onions on top.  Serve warm and enjoy.

Recipe Tips:

  • Chicken – Cut chicken in bite size pieces. You can also use chicken thighs if you prefer. Cook chicken until cooked thorough and set chicken aside.
  • Vegetables – We recommend when preparing the chicken that cut them about the same size. This allows the chicken to cook evenly and thoroughly.
  • Sauce – When adding in the sauce, stir fry the sauce with the other ingredients until well heat and covered completely.
  • Hoisin Sauce – This sauce is good for other things. You can use it as a condiment, dipping sauce or as a salad dressing.

Variations:

  • Chicken – Feel free to use other types of chicken. You can use chicken thighs or chicken tenders. Make sure to cut about the same size.
  • Change the Meat – You can change the meat to shrimp, pork, or beef. Make sure to cook the meat before mixing with the other ingredients.
  • Noodles – Any thick noodles will work with this recipe. We do not recommend thin noodles. We have even used ramen noodles for an easy swap. For our family we made about 4 packets of ramen noodles and mixed with the other ingredients.
  • Hoisin Sauce – If you are making this dish and are out of Hoisin sauce, you can substitute with plain BBQ Sauce or Oyster Sauce. This is definitely a condiment that we like to always have on hand.
  • Other Vegetables – Add in other vegetables for added flavor. Slice mushrooms are always a great addition. We also recommend baby corn, bean sprouts, snap peas, and chopped broccoli.

Side Ideas:

  • Salad – This Hoisin Chicken with Noodles is a hearty dish, so I usually pair this dish with a light salad.
  • Egg Rolls – You can make some homemade egg rolls or spring rolls. This makes for a delicious side. Frozen egg rolls is also an easy idea.
  • White Rice – Anytime I make an Asian dish a side of white rice is always served. I like to serve on the side but you can serve the hoisin chicken noodles over the top.

What is Udon Noodles?

Udon noodles is a thick style noodle that is made from wheat flour. This style of noodles is perfect for soaking up delicious sauces. Udon noodles is a Chinese condiment is delicious and easy to make.

How to Store Leftovers:

Refrigerate the leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days.  This noodle dish is perfect for leftovers. The ingredients will really marinate together and is even better the next day.

We do not recommend freezing this dish as the noodles do not thaw well after been frozen.

Reheat the dish in the microwave or on the stovetop.

This was delicious! My changes: I had no red pepper so I used celery and broccoli and water chestnuts. I used spaghetti instead of udon noodles. Loved the sauce! Loved the meal – yum yum!
