A greased rectangular baking pan sits on a marble countertop surrounded by ingredients for butterscotch brownies—sticks of butter, a bowl of brown sugar, vanilla extract, two eggs, and a floral-patterned cloth.

Step 1 – First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Get your pan ready and spray it with cooking spray or line with parchment paper. You will need a 9×13 pan.

A glass mixing bowl with butter, brown sugar, and white sugar sits on a countertop—essentials for butterscotch brownies. Nearby are three eggs, vanilla extract, flour, a greased baking pan, and a floral kitchen towel.

Step 2 – Add the butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar together and beat until well combined in a large bowl with an electric mixer.

Step 5 – Gradually stir the flour mixture into the butter mixture just until combined. I like to do this step by hand so that I don’t overmix.

Step 7 – Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake in a preheated oven. Bake for about 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Recipe Tips and Variations Ideas

  • Baking Pan – Make sure you have a good pan. This recipe calls for a 9×13 baking dish. The ones with the lid are really handy if you are taking this dish somewhere.
  • Cool Brownies – If you don’t have a wire rack, they are so handy to help cool the cake completely. I would definitely pick up a set if you don’t have any. They will get used a lot if you bake.
  • Don’t Overbake – They’ll continue cooking as they cool — soft centers are key!
  • Variations – Add white chocolate chips, pecans, walnuts, or a caramel drizzle.

It was late n I needed a dessert for the next day so I made this butterscotch bar, but just before I put the pan in the oven I realized I had used baking soda instead of powder n a whole bag of chips instead of a cup. Well it still turned out good n my husband loved it!

Which is correct? The list of ingredients calls for baking soda yet the instructions calls for baking powder.
