Hi Carrie, I’m so glad I found this recipe for homemade onion soup mix.. I actually found it when I was looking for recipe for Crockpot Apricit Chicken AND Catalina Crockpot Chicken..
I lived in Southern Ontario,Canada for many years & now that I’m back living in Scotland, I find myself at the mercy of Amazon & eBay and their ridiculously expensive prices for Lipton Onion soup mix.. Catalina dressing AND Poppyseed dressing.. But I find I need them in my pantry, so my hands have been tied.. Our Supermarkets here do not have these particular items..hence I’m stuck with online providers..
I am definitely going to make the onion soup mix..Can I just ask you, can I shave/ chop finely beef boullion cubes? .. As the beef granules here are the gravy type ones which would be no good.. Or… could I grate the cubes with my microplane???
Thanks so much.. Lorna, ??????? Scotland..

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

Lorna – Thank you so much for your comment. Yes, I think that you can shave or chop beef bouillon cubes instead of using the beef granules. I hope you enjoy this recipe and that I you enjoy the apricot chicken and Catalina chicken recipes as well!

This is so much cheaper than buying the mix packets. I’m glad I found it. I had a similar recipe, but lost it, and was paying so much more to have someone else mix it up for me — i.e. the company that makes the packets.

One comment: in the intro to the recipe, it says:
” In the Onion Soup Mix that you is store bought, there is about 3 tablespoons. When preparing this recipe, it makes 1 envelope of dry onion soup mix. ”
As posted here, the recipe actually makes 6 tablespoons, or the equivalent of TWO packets of mix.

  3. Rose says:

I find that packaged onion soup mix is extremely salty. Your recipe calls for beef bouillon granules and I have some, but they are not low sodium. In your opinion, do I need to try and find low sodium granules to avoid the same problem?

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

I find this isn’t as salty as the regular mix. I would try it first and see if you like it.
