We usually make Black Eyed Peas on the Stove-Top but placing in the pressure cooker is even easier. There is no soaking required and in less than 30 minutes and simple seasoning this vegetables is ready to serve.

You will love the way they taste and how easy they are to make. Even my pickiest eater will eat a spoonful because of how delicious they are.

  • Box Chicken Broth
  • Petite Diced Tomatoes
  • Diced Ham 
  • Onion, diced
  • Minced Garlic
  • Salt and Black Pepper

Variations Ideas:

  • Add Meat – We love the ham adds to the black eyed peas. But you can also add a ham bone or ham hocks for more flavor. Feel free to also add in bacon or slice smoked sausage.
  • Collard Greens – Instant Pot black eyed peas and collard greens is a delicious combination.
  • Seasoning – Feel free to use different types of seasoning to add flavor. Add in thyme, bay leaves, cloves garlic, and smoked paprika.
  • Broth – Chicken broth is delicious addition but feel free to use vegetable broth or 4 cups of water.

Step 1 – Rinse the black eyed beans.

Step 2 – Place the cleaned dry beans in the Instant pot.

Step 3 – Add the chicken broth, can of diced tomatoes, ham, onion, garlic, and pepper in the instant pot.

Step 4 – Stir to combine. Add the lid and set the valve to sealing. Press the Pressure Cook/Manual button (or dial) and use the + or – button (or dial) to select 17 minutes on High Pressure.

  • Step 5 – Once it is cooked, allow it to do a natural release for at least 15 minutes, then release the remaining pressure.
  • Step 6 – Stir, serve, and enjoy!

  • Preparing Black Eyed Peas – Before placing the black eyed peas in the instant pot, make sure to rinse and remove any debris. We like to pour the black eyed peas in a colander while running water over them.
  • Cooking Time – Cooking time will vary depending on your instant pot. We recommend cooking on high pressure and let the pressure cooker do a natural release. This allows the black eyed peas to continue cookie.
  • Combining Ingredients – There is no need to use a separate bowl to combine the ingredients. Everything can be combined straight in the instant pot.

Store the leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. We think they taste even better the next day as the ingredients really marinate together. When you are ready to reheat, heat on the stovetop or in the microwave depending on how much you have left.

Can I Freeze?

Black Eyed Peas freeze great if stored in a freezer safe container. They will last about 3 months. When ready to serve, thaw overnight in the fridge.

How Long to Cook Black Eyed Peas:

Cook black eyed peas in the instant pot for about 17 minutes on high pressure. Then allow the pressure cooker to do a natural release for about 10 minutes.
