Recipe Notes

Browning the sausage is optional and this recipe can be made without these steps, but I found that it adds a ton of the flavor to the recipe and is worth the additional time needed.
I recommend using a crock pot that is at least 5 quarts or larger.
If the potatoes are large, quarter them as well so that they’re all approximately the same size and will cook around the same time.
Refrigerate any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

Recipe Tips

  • Crockpot Recommendations – I recommend using a crock pot that is at least 5 quarts or larger.
  • Cut Potatoes – If the potatoes are large, quarter them as well so that they’re all approximately the same size and will cook around the same time.
  • Don’t overfill the Slow Cooker – Cabbage cooks down as it softens.
  • Slice Sausage Evenly – Helps everything cook at the same time.

Variations Ideas

  • Add More Vegetables – This is a great recipe to add in more veggies such as chopped baby carrots or corn for a complete meal idea.
  • Spicy Version – Use spicy sausage or add ½ teaspoon of red pepper flakes.
  • Spices – This is the perfect meal to change the seasoning to what you prefer. Right before serving drizzle with Garlic Butter Recipe for amazing flavor. You can even add in ½ teaspoon of paprika, garlic powder and a bay leaf for added flavor.

She’s right about browning the sausages. I make a stove top version and always brown my sausage. In fact any meat in a recipe, especially with stews and soups always brown your meat first. I will be trying this recipe for sure.
