How to Boil Corn on the Cob
Step 1 – Fill a large pot with cold water and heat on the stove on high heat. Bring to a boil. (You can also use salted water to boil the corn)
Step 2 – Once your large pot of water is warm add in a stick of butter and a cup of milk. You can also add in sugar, but it is not necessary.

Step 3 – Peel the corn husks off your ear of corn and remove the silks. Add the corn cobs to the hot water mixture once the water has return to boiling.

Step 4 – Cook the shuck corn cobs for 8-10 minutes, use tongs to carefully remove the corn and enjoy. Cover the pot until ready to eat.

Step 5 – I like to discard the water outside rather than the sink because of the butter in the water. Brush more butter and sprinkle with salt and black pepper if you prefer. Serve immediately on a serving platter. Enjoy!
Tips for Success
- Start with fresh corn. The fresher the corn, the sweeter and more flavorful it will be. Look for bright green husks and plump kernels.
- Don’t overcook the corn. Fresh corn only needs about 8 to 10 minutes. Cooking it too long can make the kernels tough and less sweet.
- Add the corn after the water is boiling. This helps the corn cook evenly and prevents it from becoming waterlogged.
- Use the butter and milk trick. We’ve found that simmering the corn with butter and milk helps enhance the natural sweetness and gives the corn a richer flavor.
- Serve immediately for the best texture. Corn is at its sweetest and juiciest right after cooking.
- Keep it warm for a crowd. Once cooked, cover the pot and remove it from the heat. The corn will stay warm while you finish preparing the rest of the meal.

I have been married for 64 years and have taught my children add grandchildren to make it.
Take the leaves off the combs of corn.
Fill the pot 1/2 way with water. Put in a little salt.
I donβt use pepper because husband is highly allergic. I put in 1 to 2 tablespoons if margarine or butter into the water.
Place them in the pot standing in. Put the cover on and bring to a boil. Put the corn in standing up in a circle Give it about 15 minutes and it is usually done perfectly. If your family likes salt then put it in the water you are cooking the corn in. Itβs easy and quick, minimum cleaning needed.

THanks! I’ll fix that.
Between living in a small town in “rural America,” with not much in the way of farm fresh produce, I was pretty skeptic when I bought the first batch of corn that appeared in our grocery store for the season. I found your recipe and gave it a try, and it turned out wonderful (considering all the above obstacles). I added a little more salt and some sugar to my water out of habit, but otherwise followed your recipe. Thank you,
Have cooked corn (on the cob) many years & many ways…I am now resigned to the microwave style…Quick, delicious & no silk picking, ever !!!
So you turn the pot off once the corn is in? This sounds delicious and I will be trying tonight!
I cook it in the boiling water for 8-10 minutes prior to turning the burner off. Thank you!
