Why Cottage Cheese Works in Pizza Crust?

Adding in more protein into your diet is as simple as adding in cottage cheese to traditional pizza crusts recipes. It worked really well in this pizza crust recipe because it gave my family’s favorite food high protein content, adds moisture and is bursting with flavor.

It binds well with the other ingredients which helps to create a sturdy crust to add your favorite toppings.

Ingredients

Five small bowls and a measuring cup hold shredded cheese, flour, pizza sauce, salt, baking powder, and creamy cottage cheese—perfect ingredients for making a delicious homemade cottage cheese pizza crust.
  • All Purpose Flour – You can use self-rising flour instead of the all purpose flour, baking powder and salt if you prefer.
  • Baking Powder – Leavening agent
  • Salt – Kosher Salt or Regular Salt can be used
  • Cottage Cheese – We like using low curd cottage cheese
  • Pizza Sauce – Use jar pizza sauce or you can make Homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe. You can even use marinara sauce
  • Shredded Mozzarella Cheese – We recommend using cheese that you shred from bulk cheese
  • Pizza Toppings – Add your favorite pizza toppings such as slice mushrooms, bell peppers, fresh basil, red onions, tomatoes, spinach and black olives

Recipe Tips

  • Preparing the Dough – Combine the ingredients until dough forms. Make to allow the dough to rest before rolling it into your pizza crust. I like to let the pizza crust rest for a few minutes before adding the pizza toppings.
  • Baking Crust – Cooking time will vary when baking the crust. You may need to adjust the time depending on your oven and the size of your crust.
  • Baking Sheet – For easy cleanup I like to add parchment paper to the pizza pan.

Variations Ideas

  • Gluten-Free – If you prefer a gluten free crust or low carb, substitute the flour with almond flour. The texture of the crust will be slightly softer.
  • Mini Pizzas – When I am making these for my kids friends, I like to make the crust into mini pizza so everyone can add their favorite toppings.
  • Make Ahead – Save time and make your pizza ahead of time then store in the fridge.
  • Seasoning – Feel free to add in your 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, Italian Seasoning, black pepper, oregano or onion powder dough for more flavor.
  • Greek Yogurt – If you are out of cottage cheese, substitute with plain Greek Yogurt.
