Variations Ideas

  • Change Meat – We used ground beef in this recipe, but you can easily make it with ground turkey or a mixture of both. You can also use Italian Sausage as a delicious variation.
  • Pepperoni – Feel free to use turkey pepperoni as an easy substitute.
  • Vegetables – This is a great recipe to sneak in some vegetables. Slice mushrooms, green peppers, chopped onions or black olives are great options.
  • Seasoning – We like to make Homemade Italian Seasoning for this recipe. You can easily make this oregano, basil, thyme and rosemary. The store bought blend works great too. Check out Substitutes for Italian Seasoning if you run out.
  • Sauce – Feel free to use pizza sauce or marinara sauce instead of the tomato mixture.

How to Make Pizza Sloppy Joes

  • Step 1 – Brown the ground beef in a large skillet with the salt, pepper and minced garlic. Drain off any excess grease.

  • Step 2 – Stir in the Italian Seasoning, tomatoes, tomato sauce, sugar and pepperoni.
Adding in the sauce and pepperoni to the beef mixture in the skillet
  • Step 3 – Allow the ingredients to simmer on low for 5-7 minutes until the flavors are combined.
  • Step 4 – Serve on the hamburger buns and top with the mozzarella cheese.  Enjoy!

Recipe Tips

  • Cooking Ground Beef – Before mixing in the sauce ingredients, make sure to drain the cooked ground beef to get rid of excess grease.
  • Allow to Simmer – After adding in the sauce ingredients allow everything to simmer for the best flavor.
  • Skillet Recommendations – You can use any type of skillet to make this recipe. We recommend using a cast iron skillet for best results. Check out How to Clean Cast Iron Skillet if you need to remove any rust. You may even like to check out Cast Iron Skillet Recipes.

Serving Ideas

Keep it quick and easy. It goes great with a simple side salad. This is our go to side dish on busy weeknights and it pairs well with pizza sloppy joes.

Sometimes I also serve it with steamed broccoli and that is so fast and easy. The kids also like Grilled Corn on the Cob.

You can also cut up veggies for something quick for the kids. Celery and carrots are always good.
