Pro Tips for Perfect Crockpot Ribs

  • Grill – You can also grill the baby back ribs a few minutes on each side instead of broiling them if you prefer.  Don’t skip this step as it adds a ton of flavor to the sauce by caramelizing it.
  • Prepare Ribs – Removing the membrane on the bone side helps seasoning penetrate and improves tenderness.
  • Cooking Time – We usually cook the ribs on low for about 6-8 hours as we start them in the morning & they are ready when get home. Feel free to cook on high if your prefer.
  • Don’t Skip the Broiling Step – Broiling the ribs for a few minutes caramelizes the BBQ sauce and gives the ribs that classic sticky texture similar to grilled ribs.
  • Make Ahead Tip – You can season the ribs with the spice rub the night before and store them covered in the refrigerator. In the morning, place them in the slow cooker with BBQ sauce and start cooking. This saves time on busy mornings.

Flavor Variations

  • Asian Flavor Ribs – Swap BBQ sauce for hoisin, add 2 Tbsp soy sauce, and finish with toasted sesame seeds.
  • Chipotle Honey – Stir 2 chopped chipotle peppers in adobo sauce and 3 Tbsp honey, brown sugar or maple syrup into the sauce for smoky-sweet heat.
  • Spices and Sauces – Feel free to change or add in spices to what you prefer. We have added in ½ tsp of onion powder to these beef short ribs for added flavor. We have even substituted the water for beef broth, apple cider vinegar or red wine sauce.

Slow Cooker Beef Ribs FAQ

Can I Start with Frozen Ribs?

We recommend thawing ribs first before adding them to the slow cooker. This helps them cook evenly and reach a safe internal temperature.

Can I Make with Boneless Ribs

Bone-in ribs deliver better flavor and moisture but boneless ribs can be used in the same timing and will be packed with flavor.

How to Store Leftover Ribs

Store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5-6 days in the fridge.

How to Reheat Ribs

We usually reheat the ribs in the microwave but you can also place in a baking dish and reheat in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes.
