What are smash burger sliders?

Smash burgers are loosely packed balls of meat that are cooked in a large cast iron skillet or griddle. They are pressed into a thin patty with a burger press or spatula.

These are sliders so they are smaller than the traditional Smash Burger size. We love the smaller burger patties for parties, quick weeknight dinners and more.

It’s just fun to eat and the perfect size. Sliders Recipes also work great for little hands if you have younger children that might have trouble eating a larger burger.

How to make smash burger sliders:

  • Step 1. Form the balls. Roll the beef into approximately 1.5 ounce size balls.  Season them with salt and pepper. Place them in the refrigerator until you are ready to cook them.
Plate with burgers ready for the grill or stove.
  • Step 2. Prepare the pan or griddle. Preheat a griddle or cast iron pan over medium high heat (approximately 400 degrees F). Make sure the pan is hot before placing the meat in.
  • Step 3. Warm the rolls. Cut the slider rolls in half and place them on the griddle for 2 minutes to toast them and then set them aside while you prepare the beef.
  • Step 4. Melt the butter. Place the remaining butter on the griddle or cast iron pan. Move it around to melt the butter.
  • Step 5. Place the beef balls on the griddle in the melted butter. You may need to work in batches depending on the size of your pan. Then top each one with a piece on parchment paper and then firmly press down to smash the beef into a thin patty with either a burger press or a large spatula and then discard the parchment paper.

  • Step 6. Cook the patties. Continue to cook the patties for 2 minutes until the juices in the beef start to raise to the top and the color starts to change. Then scrape under the patty to get under the caramelized parts and flip the patty. Once flipped, do not smash down the patties again.

Recipe tips

  • Form the patties loosely. When preparing the balls with the beef, do not pack them together. Loosely roll them into balls so that they are easier to smash.
  • Ground beef. You can use 90/10 or 93/7 for this recipe to lower the fat content in this recipe, but we think that the 80/20 gives the best flavor to this recipe.
  • Chill the meat. The burgers will be juicer if the meat is chilled. The fat content will stay in the meat.
  • Rolls. We used Hawaiian Rolls but you can use anytype of slider size rolls you prefer.

How to store leftovers:

Leftover sliders can be placed inside an airtight container and refrigerated. Stored properly, they will last 3 to 4 days in the fridge.

Make sure to store the patties separately from the buns and toppings so they don’t get soggy. Leftover sliders smash burgers taste great.

These make great lunches for the kids and reheat easily.
