What is Chalupa Supreme?

Chalupa supreme is loaded with a seasoned beef mixture, cheese and lettuce. This mixture is loaded in a thick, fluffy shell that has been deep fried. Low fat sour cream crisp shell filled with beef blend and diced ripe tomatoes.

Ingredients

Ingredients needed for Chalupa Supreme - flour, baking powder, salt, vegetable oil, milk, ground beef, onion, taco seasoning, salsa, water, sour cream, lettuce, shredded cheese, tomatoes

Chalupas Ingredients: 

  • All Purpose Flour 
  • Baking Powder 
  • Salt 
  • Vegetable Oil (plus more for Frying) 
  • Milk 

For the Beef Mixture: 

  • Ground Beef 
  • Small Onion (chopped) 
  • Taco Seasoning 
  • Salsa 
  • Water 

Topping Variations: 

  • Sour Cream 
  • Shredded Lettuce 
  • Shredded Mexican Cheese Blend 
  • Tomatoes (diced)

Variation Ideas

  • Meat – We made this recipe with beef, but you can use chicken, carne asada, or steak reduced fat sour cream.
  • Toppings – Add your favorite toppings such as sour cream, cheese and guacamole. You can even add in black beans, roasted vegetables and lime juice.

How to Make Taco Bell Chalupa Supreme

Whisk together dry ingredients in a bowl

Step 1 – In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 2 cups of flour, baking powder and salt.  

Mix in milk to form into a dough

Step 2 – Then mix in 1 tablespoon vegetable oil. Gradually stir in the milk.  Then mix in the remaining flour until a dough forms.  Knead the dough with your hands. 

  • Step 4 – Add more milk if the mixture is too dry and add more flour if the mixture is too wet.  
 Cut the dough into 8 equal parts

Step 5 –Form the dough into a long log and cut it into 8 equal parts.

Step 6 – Use your hands to form each part into a round circle on a floured surface that is approximately 6 inches across.  

  • Step 6 – Once all the circles are formed, use a fork to poke a few holes into each of them. 
  • Step 7 – Heat 2 inches of the vegetable oil in a large pot until it’s approximately 350 degrees Fahrenheit. 
  • Step 8 – Cook the circles one at a time.  Place one of the disks in the hot oil and cook it for 5 seconds on each side. 
  • Step 9 – Use tongs to gently fold the disk in half to make a taco shape.  Then hold it in the oil and allow it to cook for 1-2 minutes.  Use the tongs to flip it over and hold the other half in the oil to cook for 1-2 minutes.  
  • Step 10 – Once the entire shell is golden brown. Remove it from the oil to a plate lined with a paper towel to soak up the excess oil.  
  • Step 11 – Continue this process until all the shells are fried.  

How to Make Beef Mixture:

  • Step 1 – Brown the ground beef with the onion in a skillet until brown over medium high heat. Drain the excess grease.

  • Step 2 – Stir in the water, taco seasoning and salsa.
  • Step 3 – Heat uncovered for 3-5 minutes until the flavors are combined.
  • Step 4 – Remove from heat.  

To Assemble: 

  • Step 5 – Fill each of the shells with the beef mixture. 
  • Step 6 – Top with the sour cream, crisp shredded lettuce, shredded cheese and diced tomatoes. 
  • Step 7 – Serve immediately while warm and enjoy!  

Recipe Tips

  • Chalupa – It’s best to use room temperature milk when making the chalupa.  
  • Ground Beef – This recipe can be made with leftover ground beef.

What is the Difference between of a Chalupa and a Taco?

The main difference between a taco and a chalupa is the taco shell. Chalupa is made with a thick, fried shells where a regular taco is made with corn tortilla or homemade flour tortillas.
