Variations to Peanut Butter Banana Roll Ups

  • Nutella – Swap peanut butter for Nutella for a decadent treat. Better yet, use them both together.
  • Chocolate Chips – Sprinkle the peanut butter with mini chocolate chips, the place the banana on top and roll.
  • Melted Chocolate – Dip your pinwheels in melted chocolate.
  • Jelly – Add your favorite jelly or jam with the peanut butter.
  • Nut-Free Spread of Choice – Instead of using peanut butter use almond butter, sunflower seed butter, granola butter or apple butter if there’s a peanut allergy.
  • Tortilla Variations – Swap out the flour tortillas for a low carb tortilla and use an all-natural peanut butter for a lower-carb treat. You can even use a whole wheat tortilla or gluten-free tortilla. Make these roll ups with slice of bread if you are out of tortillas.
  • Additions – Top the peanut butter with shredded coconut, hemp seeds, chia seeds, sea salt, or chop nuts. You can even add slice strawberries for added flavor.
  • Honey – Drizzle a small amount of raw honey on the peanut butter and sprinkle with cinnamon before adding the banana. You can even use maple syrup.
  • Toast the Roll Ups – Take it to the next level by grilling your peanut butter banana roll up before you slice them. Pan-frying or making air fryer peanut butter banana roll ups are a delicious variation.

How to Make Banana Peanut Butter Roll Ups

Tortilla on a cutting board with peanut butter spread on the tortilla

Step 1 – Spread Peanut butter over the entire surface of the tortilla. Don’t skimp on this part – you will want to go heavy on the peanut butter.

Step 2 – Place the medium banana in the middle of the tortilla.

Step 3 – Roll the tortilla around the peanut butter. You might need to cut the banana in half so it will lay a little flatter.

Step 4 – Finish rolling and then slice in about 1 inch pieces. It is really that easy to make.

Expert Tips

  • Cut Banana – If you prefer a less banana taste, feel free to cut the banana in half lengthwise and then rolled it up. So one banana actually ends up making two roll ups. I liked it better that way but my kids didn’t care either way.
  • Cut Roll Ups – You can slice the banana rolls ups what ever size that you prefer. I like doing small sizes especially when serving with with snacks such as Easy After School Snacks for Kids.
  • Tortilla – It is best to use a tortilla that is at room temperature to make it pliable. You may need to heat in the microwave for about 10 seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Banana and Peanut Butter a Healthy Snack?

Absolutely! Peanut butter is a good source of protein and the banana is a healthy source of carbs. The combo together will help replenish your energy and keep it going through the afternoon slump. That’s what makes these peanut butter and banana pinwheels a great after school or even a post-workout snack. Sometimes we even make these simple pinwheels for lunch.

Can I Make Ahead of Time?

We recommend making them right before serving so the banana stays fresh.

Do I Need to Use a Ripe Banana?

We prefer to use bananas that are hard and not over-ripped so they hold up butter when wrapping in the tortilla.

I added a little sea salt to the banana, don’t bother. I also went a little heavier on the peanut butter, a bit to much, but do this twice and you will find the balance you like. Going to take this to work for lunch.

  2. Carrie says:

I usually make these right before serving as the bananas will brown in a few hours. Thanks!

  3. Leann says:

How far in advance can you make these with out the banana turning brown?
