Can I Use Cottage Cheese in Buffalo Chicken Dip?

Yes, cottage cheese is an easy substitute for the cream cheese in the classic buffalo chicken dip recipe. Cottage cheese still gives this popular game day appetizer a creamy texture but with a healthier and higher protein twist.

This gluten free dip is always requested because of the flavor, creamy texture and the melty cheese topping.

Ingredients

Five bowls on a white surface contain shredded chicken, cheddar cheese, chopped green onions, cottage cheese, buffalo sauce, and a small bowl of seasoning—perfectly prepped for making creamy buffalo chicken dip.
  • Shredded Chicken Breasts – You can make the dip with leftover shredded chicken, shred chicken from a rotisserie chicken or make your own shredded chicken.
  • Cottage Cheese – We used full fat small curd cottage cheese but you can use what you prefer
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese – Use freshly shredded cheese for the best taste and it melts better than pre-shredded cheese
  • Buffalo Sauce – Use store bought or make Homemade Buffalo Sauce Recipe. I would not recommend substituting hot sauce for buffalo sauce. The flavor and taste would not be the same.
  • Garlic Powder – If you are out, see The Best Garlic Powder Substitute. Garlic salt is an easy substitute.
  • Green Onions – Optional topping

Step 5 – Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese on top. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the dip is bubbly.

  • Step 6 – Remove from the oven, let it cool slightly and then it’s ready to serve topped with the diced green onions and blue cheese crumbles with chips and veggie sticks.  Enjoy!

Recipe Tips

  • Blended Cottage Cheese – You don’t have to blend the cottage cheese before mixing in with the other ingredients. But the cheese curds won’t melt completely (this bothers some and not others), so blend based on your preference.
  • Spreading Mixture – Make sure to spread the buffalo mixture completely in the bottom of the pan. This will ensure that each will be layered with all the ingredients.
  • Baking Pan – We used a regular 9×9 baking pan but if you double the recipe, make sure to use a large baking dish.
  • Broil – If you prefer the cheese to have a slight burnt topping, you can broil the dip for 2 minutes.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Dairy Free – If you prefer a dip that is dairy-free, then choose dairy free shredded cheese and cottage cheese.
  • Creamier – For a creamier texture, feel free to add in a tablespoon or two of softened cream cheese.
  • Spicy Dip – If you prefer a spicy dip, add in some diced jalapenos or extra hot buffalo sauce.
  • Additions – Feel free to change or add in spices to what you prefer. We recommend ½ tsp of onion powder, ranch seasoning or taco seasoning.
  • Greek Yogurt – If you prefer, you can substitute the cottage cheese with Greek Yogurt. This dip will still be packed with protein.
