What is the Batter of a Corn Dog made of?

The batter that we dip the corn dogs in is a corn meal base batter. It is mixed with simple ingredients such as flour, sugar, buttermilk and honey. It is a perfect balance of sweet and salty.

These combined ingredients makes the perfect batter to dip your hot dog in. When deep fried it makes the crust have a crispy texture and soft on the inside.

Ingredients needed - cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, buttermilk, egg, honey, hot dogs, wooden sticks, oil

Ingredients:

For the Batter:

  • Finely Ground Yellow Cornmeal
  • All Purpose Flour
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Baking Powder
  • Salt
  • Buttermilk
  • Egg
  • Honey

For the Corndogs:

  • Hot Dogs (regular size)
  • Wooden Sticks (hot dog sticks, popsicle sticks, etc)
  • Vegetable Oil (for frying)

How to Make Homemade Corn Dogs:

  • Step 1 – Combine dry ingredients – In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
  • Step 2 – Mix Wet Ingredients – In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg and honey.  Then gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients to make the batter.
  • Step 3 – Set aside – Set the batter aside.
  • Step 4 – Heat Oil – Heat approximately 2 inches of vegetable oil in a large pot or fryer to 350 degrees F.
  • Step 5 – Thread the Hot Dogs – Carefully thread the hot dogs onto the wooden sticks and pat the hot dogs dry with paper towels.
  • Step 6 – Pour Batter – Pour the corn dog batter into a tall drinking glass to approximately ¾ of the way full.
  • Step 7 – Dip Corn Dog – Then carefully dip the hot dog on a stick into the batter gently twisting the hot dog around to completely coat the hot dog in the batter.  Carefully shake off any excess batter.
  • Step 8 – Cook Corn Dog – Gently drop the coated hot dog on a stick into the hot oil.  Cook for 3-5 minutes (flipping as needed with tongs) until the corn dog is golden brown.
  • Step 9 – Remove from Oil – Then remove from the oil with tongs and place on a plate lined with paper towels to cool.  Continue this process until all the corndogs are prepared.  You can likely cook 2-3 corn dogs in the oil at a time depending on the size of your pot or fryer.

Step 10 – Serve and enjoy – Serve the corn dogs warm with your favorite condiments and enjoy.

Tips for Homemade Corndogs:

  • Batter – You want the batter to be thick but smooth enough to evenly coat the hot dog.  If your batter is too thick, slowly add in more buttermilk (1 tablespoon at a time) until the batter thins out.
  • Hot Dogs – We recommend using regular size of hot dogs. You can use beef, chicken or turkey but the regular size works best for this recipe.
  • Corn meal – Make sure to get the finely course corn meal.
  • Dipping the Hot Dogs – Pour the batter in a tall glass and fill it full of the batter. This allows for the hot dogs to easily dip in the batter. Make sure to fully cover the hot dogs.
  • Sticks – We used wooden sticks for the corn dogs, but you can easily use popsicle sticks.
  • Heat Oil – Heat oil in a skillet before dipping the corn dogs. This will give you a crunchy sticker.
  • Dipping Sauce – We like to serve with a side of mustard, ketchup or ranch.

What is my Corn Dog Batter not Sticking?

When combining the ingredients make sure to add in the correct amount. The batter will be thick but mix the ingredients until combine.

If the batter doesn’t stick to the hot dog, you may need to dust the hot dog with flour. Continue to dip the hot dog in the batter and it will stick.

Can you Freeze Homemade Corndogs?

Yes, you can freeze Homemade Corndogs. Corndogs make me think of my childhood in the summertime. My parents always had frozen corndogs for us to fix for lunch.

Freezing corndogs is easy to do. Simply prepare and fry your corndogs and then wrap the room temperature corndogs with plastic wrap and foil. Place in the freezer and they will stay good for about 3 to 4 months.

I like to make a large batch of homemade corn dogs. My kids always have friends over and they love to enjoy these corndogs.

How to Reheat Corndogs:

These corndogs can easily be reheated in the oven or air fryer. If baking the corndogs in the oven, place the corndogs on a baking sheet. Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes. If it is frozen, then bake the corndogs for about 15 minutes.

We also like to use our air fryer to heat the corndogs up. Place in a preheated air fryer for about 5 minutes and the results are a crispy texture corndog.

You can also put in the microwave but the texture will not be as crispy.

What to Serve with Corndogs?

There are many different sides you can serve with these corndogs. Because these corndogs are on a stick, my kids usually just eat them and come back for a plate of sides.

  • French Fries – Make these easy french fries as a delicious and easy side.
  • Fresh Fruit – Add a side of fresh berries, grapes or pineapple.
  • Roasted Vegetables – Roast some broccoli for an easy and healthy side.

Corndogs are the perfect summer time meal.
