We love to pick up a store bought rotisserie chicken for an easy weeknight dinner. I recently thought I would attempt to make a rotisserie Chicken at home. The results were fantastic.

The entire family loved this easy recipe for Rotisserie chicken. From the crispy skin to the tender meat, it was cooked to perfection. We all really enjoyed it and I loved how easy it was. How to Make Rotisserie Chicken

Step 1 – Combine the seasonings. Mix together the seasonings in a small bowl.

Step 2 – Dry the chicken. Use paper towels to dab the chicken until it is dry. Rub the outside of the chicken with olive oil and then rub on the seasoning mixture onto the outside of the chicken.

Step 3 – Secure the wings. Tie the wings of the chicken behind the chicken with kitchen twine.

Step 4 – Preheat the oven. It should be set to 450 degrees F.  Place the whole chicken in a large roasting pan or a cast iron skillet with the chicken breast side facing up.  

Step 5 – Brown the chicken. Cook at 450 degrees F for 12-15 minutes to brown the outside of the skin on the chicken.  This gives the chicken the golden color that rotisserie chicken is known for.

Step 6 – Reduce the temperature. Then reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees F and cook for 60-70 minutes until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 160 degrees F.  

Step 7 – Allow to rest. Then remove the chicken and let it rest for 10-15 minutes and the chicken should reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees F during this resting time.  We use a digital meat thermometer.

Step 8 – Serve and enjoy this chicken. Then the chicken is ready to slice and enjoy!

Instructions

To Roast in the Oven:

  • Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
  • Place the whole chicken in a large roasting pan or a cast iron skillet with the breast side facing up.
  • Cook at 450 degrees F for 12-15 minutes to brown the outside of the skin on the chicken.  Then reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees F and cook for 60-70 minutes until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 160 degrees F.
  • Then remove the chicken and let it rest for 10-15 minutes and the chicken should reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees F during this resting time.
  • Then the chicken is ready to slice and enjoy!

To Cook on a Rotisserie:

  • Skewer the chicken. Insert the chicken into the rotisserie.
  • Then cook the chicken based on the rotisserie’s manufacturer’s instructions.  This is usually around 18-20 minutes per pound so it would be approximately 60 minutes for a 3 pound chicken.
  • Once the chicken has reached an internal temperature of 160 degrees F.
  • Then remove the chicken and let it rest for 10-15 minutes and the chicken should reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees F during this resting time.
  • Then the chicken is ready to slice and enjoy!

  • Supplies Needed – We made this rotisserie chicken in a rotisserie machine but you can also make large roasting pan. Make sure you also have some kitchen twine and a instant-read thermometer.
  • Make in advance. You can prepare the chicken with the seasoning and refrigerate up to 24 hours before cooking.

  • Meat thermometer. It is important to make sure the chicken is fully cooked. Use a meat thermometer to ensure it is 165 degrees inserted into the thickest portion.
  • Oil. Olive oil gives the chicken great flavor but you can use any oil you prefer or have on hand.

How To Cut Rotisserie Chicken

  • Remove the string. Unwind this from the wing and leg area of the chicken.
  • Separate the leg and thigh. Use a sharp knife to separate this joint.
  • Pull apart the wing from the chicken. Simply twist the wing away from the chicken.
  • Cut the breast into slices. Use a knife to cut slices on each side of the chicken breast.
  • Slice or shred the chicken. Either option is great.
