Variations Ideas

  • Change Cheese – Feel free to change the cheese to yellow cheddar, white cheddar cheese, Swiss, and Gruyere. These substitutions give the grilled cheese delicious flavor.
  • Additions – For added flavor add slices of cooked bacon, ham, pesto, slice tomatoes, or spinach.
  • Butter Mixture – Make a parmesan butter spread by adding in a tablespoon of parmesan cheese to the butter. We have even added in garlic powder for additional flavor.

Step by Step Instructions

Heating skillet

Step 1 – Preheat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat.

Spreading butter on slice of bread on a plate

Step 2 – Butter one side of each slice of sourdough bread with the softened butter. If using mayonnaise, spread it on the opposite side of one slice of bread.

Place the butter bread on the heated skillet

Step 3 – Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, onto the skillet.

Topping the slice of bread with the three slices of cheeses

Step 4 – Layer one slice of cheddar cheese, followed by a slice of provolone cheese, and then the slice of mozzarella cheese on the bread in the skillet.

Place the other slice of bread on the slice of cheese to make a sandwich

Step 5 – Place the second slice of sourdough bread on top, buttered side up.

Cooked grilled cheese in a skillet

Step 6 – Cook for 4-5 minutes on one side or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese starts to melt. Carefully flip the sandwich and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes. Cook until the other side is golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.

  • Step 7 – Remove from the skillet and let it sit for a minute before slicing. Cut the sandwich in half and serve immediately.

Recipe Tips

  • Cooking Temperature: The cooking time is based on a medium heat setting. Monitor the heat closely during testing, as cooking on too high of a temperature could cause the bread to brown too quickly
    without melting the cheese.
