Spaghetti is a meal that we make on a weekly basis. Making this meat sauce from scratch makes our spaghetti dinner taste that much better. We love making stovetop recipes and this Bolognese sauce is one of our favorites. But if you prefer you can make Instant Pot Bolognese Recipe or Crock Pot Bolognese Sauce.

What is Bolognese Sauce?

Bolognese sauce is a rich Italian meat sauce traditionally made with ground meat, tomatoes, and aromatics like onion, carrot, and celery. Unlike a basic spaghetti sauce, it simmers slowly to develop a thick, hearty texture and deep flavor.

This version keeps things simple and budget-friendly while still delivering that classic, comforting taste.

Ingredients

Ingredients for recipe: ground beef, onion, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, minced garlic, salt and pepper, bay leaf, red wine and chicken broth.
  • Ground Beef – We typically use 80/20 for the best flavor, but you can easily use ground turkey or whatever is on sale to keep this recipe budget-friendly.
  • Onion – Yellow onion works best for flavor, but white onion is a great substitute. Dice it small so it blends into the sauce for picky eaters.
  • Crushed Tomatoes – Canned crushed tomatoes keep this recipe affordable and convenient. You can also use diced tomatoes and blend them if needed.
  • Tomato paste – This adds richness and helps thicken the sauce. If you only have a smaller can, it will still work—just simmer a little longer.
  • Worcestershire sauce – Adds a deep, savory flavor without extra cost. A little goes a long way, so don’t skip it if you have it.
  • Italian seasoning – An easy, budget-friendly way to add flavor. You can also mix your own with oregano, basil, and garlic powder.
  • Minced Garlic – Fresh or jarred both work great. Jarred garlic is a great time-saver for busy nights.
  • Salt and Pepper – Season to taste. Start light and adjust after simmering.
  • Bay Leaf – Adds extra depth while simmering. Don’t forget to remove it before serving.
  • Red Wine – Optional, but adds richness. You can substitute with extra chicken broth to keep it budget-conscious.
  • Chicken Broth – Adds flavor and helps create the perfect consistency. You can swap with beef broth or even water with a bouillon cube.
