Remember, unopened cans of beans have a very long shelf life. However, after they are cooked as baked beans they will go bad quickly if not stored correctly.

These helpful tips will help freeze cooked baked beans so you can enjoy them another time.

  • Allow Beans to Cool Completely – Make sure they are at room temperature before freezing. We have even placed in the freezer for a few hours before storing them in the freezer safe container.
  • Use a freezer-safe container or freezer plastic bag – We recommend using a freezer-safe container or freezer bag when storing your baked beans. These containers do well in the freezing temperature and keep the food safe.
  • Label the container with the date – It is always helpful to put the date you put it in the freezer or when it expires. Baked Beans stay good in the freezer up to 6 months.

Tips and Tricks on Freezing Homemade Baked Beans:

  • Hot Beans – It is important to make sure beans are cooled to room temperature. If you place hot beans in the freezer they will expand and turn to mush when you try to defrost them.

  • Store in Small Containers – We recommend in storing the beans in smaller containers. You can use freezer safe containers and even glass jars. Do not refreeze beans defrosted beans as they will not keep well.

How to Thaw Baked Beans:

When you are ready to defrost and reheat your frozen beans, we recommend placing the storage container in the refrigerator. Taking them time and allowing your bake beans to thaw this way, will keep the defrosted baked beans from being to mushy.

To reheat baked beans, place in a sauce pan and heat on the stove. You can also reheat in the microwave safe dish in 1 minute intervals. Another way, you can reheat in the oven at 180 degrees in a baking dish.

  1. Reheat in a Pan – You can reheat them in a saucepan over medium low heat easily. This is my favorite way. You want to reheat them slowly, and stir regularly, so the texture and flavor of the beans stays the same.
  2. Reheating in the Microwave – Baked beans easily reheat in the microwave. Make sure to cook the in minute increments stirring in between.
  3. Reheat in the Oven – Place the thawed baked beans in a baking pan. Bake at 180 degrees for about 30 minutes or until heated through.
