Recipe Notes

Variations Ideas
  • Chicken – This recipe works great with skinless chicken breasts but you can also use chicken thighs.
  • Seasoning – Feel free to change the seasoning to what you prefer. We usually start with about ¼ teaspoon and add more to taste. Here are some of our favorite additions – garlic powder, thyme, rosemary or oregano.
  • Veggies – This is a great slow cooker recipe to add in vegetables to cook with the chicken and gravy. Add in peas, carrots or potatoes. Make sure to cut about the same size so they cook evenly.
Recipe Tips
  • Chicken – You can put your chicken in the slow cooker frozen or thaw.
  • Cooking time – Cooking time will vary based on your slow cooker and the size of your chicken.
  • Shredding Chicken – Once the chicken is cooked it is ready to be shredded. You can shred with two forks or learn how to shred with a mixer.

Could you cook potatoes and carrots in the crockpot with the chicken?

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

Yes, you can! Cut the potatoes and carrots into similar-sized pieces and place them beneath or around the chicken so they cook evenly. Make sure they are fork-tender before serving.

I just made this for my husband and he loved it!! I’m vegetarian, so I just cook it! This has a lot of potential to use in other recipes like chicken pot pie or chicken spaghetti. Since he has to eat low sodium, I used Campbells unsalted Cream of Chicken , a low sodium gravy mix, and a packet of Herb Ox chicken bouillon and water. A little flour at the end to thicken. Super easy! Thanks so much!!

My family loved this recipe but we found it to be salty so we now use low sodium gravy and soup and it has totally cured that we put it over stuffing and add whatever veggies we are in the mood for

An absolute family favorite! It is so easy and quick to prepare! So tasty and a true comfort food.

  105. Melissa LeFort says:

I made this and I added a bag of frozen mixed vegetables, I did not shred the chicken, served the gravy and vegetables over mashed potatoes. Made a can of Pillsbury flaky biscuits to go with it. This is my husband new favorite meal.

in the description of this chicken and gravy it mentions brown gravy, but i do not see it in ingredients list , why is that?

    1. Carrie says:

We used a chicken gravy mix in this recipe. It creates the gravy for the chicken in this recipe.

Every time I add cream soups to my crock pot to cook all day even on the low setting they break down. Is there any solution that I can do to keep this happening and stay creamy??

Very good. Didnt shred but cut tender chick into chunks. Very tender. Could have added one more chick breast since 1.5 lbs was only 2 large ones. One more would have worked.

  116. Karen Clements says:

Does the chicken have to be fresh, or can it be put in crock pot frozen?

    1. Carrie says:

I use frozen chicken breasts all the time, either would work!

  117. Jenny says:

If adding FROZEN PEAS AND CARROTS, at what point do I add them? If instead of that, adding FRESHLY CUT carrots (and no peas), what point should I add them?
