Variations Ideas:

  • Change Chicken – We usually make this recipe with chicken breasts. But you can easily mix in cooked ground beef or chicken thighs. This recipe also works with leftover cooked chicken or Rotisserie Chicken.
  • Homemade Cream Soup – We used canned cream soup but you can easily make homemade cream of chicken soup or homemade cream of mushroom soup.
  • Add Vegetables – This recipe works great to sneak in veggies. You can layer in green beans, chopped carrots, celery and broccoli. We have even added in cubes of potatoes to make this a complete meal idea.
  • Cooked BaconFor even more flavor add in crumble bacon or bacon bits. Chicken and bacon make a delicious combination.
  • Seasoning – Another options for added flavor is to sprinkle in a ranch seasoning packet.

Step by Step Instructions:

Mixing the cream of soups with milk and seasoning

Step 1 – In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cream of chicken soup, cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper.

Mixing in diced uncooked chicken in the cream of soup mixture in a bowl

Step 2 – Stir in the diced chicken.

Adding in a layer of shredded cheese in the slow cooker

Step 3 – Pour this mixture into a crock pot. Sprinkle one cup of cheddar cheese over the top.

Step 6 – Top with the remaining cheddar cheese.  Cover and cook on low for 5 more minutes to melt the cheese.  Turn the crock pot off and let the casserole sit for 5-10 minutes. Then serve and enjoy.

Recipe Tips:

  • Prepare Crock Pot – To easily serve this casserole, we recommend spraying the bottom of the slow cooker bowl with non-stick cooking spray. This also makes cleanup a breeze.
  • Cheese – We recommend shredding the cheese yourself instead of using pre-shredded cheese.
  • Tater Tots – There is no need to thaw the frozen tater tots before layering in the slow cooker. Take straight from the freezer to the slow cooker.
  • Cooking Time – Cooking time will vary depending on your slow cooker. We recommend cooking on low for about 5 hours.
