How to Make Korean BBQ Chicken

A saucepan on a hot plate contains dark sauce ingredients being mixed with a metal whisk. The sauce, perfect for Korean BBQ Chicken, includes minced garlic, brown sugar, and seasonings on a light gray background.

Step 1 – Whisk together all the sauce ingredients in a medium saucepan until well combined. Heat the mixture over medium high heat and bring the mixture to a boil.  Heat the mixture for 3-4 minutes until the mixture is cooked through and thickened.

Two small bowls filled with a dark brown Korean BBQ sauce, one with a basting brush resting on top. A gray-and-white checkered cloth is partially visible beside the bowls on a light textured surface.

Step 2 – Remove from the heat and divide the sauce evenly into 2 bowls.

A hand uses a brush to clean an electric Chefman grill, which is placed on a light surface next to a striped kitchen towel—perfect for whipping up Korean BBQ or BBQ Chicken at home.

Step 3 – Preheat the grill to 350 degrees F or medium heat. Gently brush the grates of the grill with the oil to prevent the chicken from sticking.

Four raw, marinated Korean BBQ chicken breasts are placed on an electric grill with metal tongs holding one piece. A checkered kitchen towel is nearby on the light-colored countertop.

Step 4 – Brush the sauce from one of the bowls all over the chicken breasts. Place the chicken on the grill. Cook for 5-7 minutes per size until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees F.

  • Step 5 – Remove the chicken from the grill, let the chicken rest for 5 minutes.
  • Step 6 – Brush the remaining Korean BBQ sauce on the chicken (heavily coating both sides).
  • Step 7 – Slice the chicken against the grain and it’s ready to serve and enjoy!

Recipe Tips

  • Marinate – For a deeper rich flavor, feel free to marinate the chicken before grilling.
  • Chicken – We recommend grilling chicken that is about the same size so the it cooks evenly. Make sure to use a meat thermometer to check internal temperature before slicing. Resting chicken after grilling allows it to lock in the juices.

Variations Ideas

  • Spicier – Add 1 tsp gochugaru (Korean red pepper flakes) and gochujang which is a korean chili paste. We have even added a teaspoon of ginger for even more flavor.
  • Sweet Twist – Add 2 tablespoons of pineapple juice or puree to the marinade.
  • Change Meat – Feel free to make this chicken recipe with boneless chicken thighs. You can even use the sauce to make a pork tenderloin, shrimp, steak or salmon.
  • Skewers – Dice the chicken and brush the sauce on the chicken for another delicious way to use this sauce.
