  • Add Veggies – Bell peppers, mushrooms, shredded carrots, peas or your favorite vegetable make this casserole heartier.

How to Thaw Frozen Hashbrowns for Casserole
For this recipe, we recommend thawing out the frozen hashbrowns before mixing with the other ingredients. These steps helps keep the moisture out of the casserole if baked with frozen hashbrowns.
  • Place frozen hashbrown bag in the fridge and let thaw overnight.
  • You can also place frozen hashbrowns in a bowl and cover. Let frozen hashbrowns thaw at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Drain in moisture before mixing with other ingredients.

What to Serve with Hamburger Casserole

This hamburger casserole is a hearty meal, so I like to serve a lighter side dish to complete the meal. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Steamed BroccoliSteam broccoli in the microwave is easy and would also be amazing without any extra work. My kids like to top the steamed broccoli with melted butter.
  • Green beans also taste great and make a simple side dish as well. We have even served with a fresh green salad.
  • Asparagus – This meal is also good with asparagus. This oven roasted asparagus is a family favorite and it is very simple and quick to make.
  • Sour Cream – My family loves to top the casserole with some sour cream.

This recipe sounds really good, definitely want to make it. Is there a different soup, that can be substituted for the cream of mushroom?

Super good! Iโ€™ve made this a bunch of times now. The family loves it. Iโ€™ve started turning the broiler on for a few minutes at the end to really give the top a nice crust before adding the remaining cheese to melt on top. I like that itโ€™s versatile so Iโ€™ve done it with frozen broccoli, or frozen peas, instead of the green beans. Sometimes Iโ€™ll throw in a little of whatever other kind of cheese I have.

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

I’m so glad you enjoy this recipe Jessica. Thank you so much for sharing and thank you for the positive review. I love the idea of crisping up the top of the casserole. I bet that is delicious!

    2. Vickie DeRogatis says:

What do you think about adding bacon bits? How much?

Vickie – I think adding bacon bits to this recipe would be delicious! I would add in 1/2 cup of bacon bits. Let me know how it turns out!

  5. Kristian says:

Iโ€™m trying this tonight! I couldnโ€™t find shredded hash browns anywhere so i got cubed ones. I figure it should be about the same lol

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

      Yes those should work great!

We loved it! I added chopped garlic, cracked pepper, onion powder and smoked paprika. I might try 1 can of soup and a cup of sour cream instead of two cans of soup next time.
No matter how you make it I highly recommend this easy recipe. Green beans are awesome paired with this dish!
    Thank you

  7. Patty says:

This recipe really looks good but I can’t find the shredded hash browns anywhere. Can someone tell me where to purchase them in Ontario, Canada

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that. They are available in the freezer section in the US. You can also shred your own potatoes for this recipe or use diced hashbrowns if those are available in your area.

What do you think of substituting cream of mushroom for cream of chicken? My daughter doesn’t like mushrooms.

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

  9. Betty says:

Pretty good. I had some LARGE chunk hash browns as well as Ore Ida chunks with peppers. Added some minced garlic, bunch of black pepper and some chopped celery for extra flavor. Divided into to two casseroles as it is just hubby and I. the other one went in the freezer.

  10. Cindy says:

When do you add the hash browns?

  11. Talia says:

Do you layer the meat mixture and then hashbrowns, or mix it all together? It doesn’t say, just that you bake it until the hashbrowns are golden and tender.

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

I will update that, but you mix it together.

  12. Heather Wilkinson says:

Made the casserole but substituted a can of celery soup instead of 2 mushrooms soups. Also seasoned w a little spicy Slap ya Mama seasoning. Teenagers loved it!

  13. Kathy says:

We had your Hamburger Hashbrown Casserole for dinner tonight and enjoyed it very much. I have a question: #3 says to add several ingredients, including PEPPER, which is not listed in the Ingredients. Should it be?

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

Oh I’m sorry – pepper it optional. I will update the card.
