Healthy banana bread recipe

My kids like eating bananas but sometimes I think they intentionally leave bananas sit on the counter with the hopes I will make banana bread. I have my go-to banana bread recipe, but I have been wanting to try a healthy banana bread recipe.

Now, I wasn’t planning on making a sugar-free, calorie-free banana bread, I mean it is still bread after all. However, I just wanted a healthier option with maybe a little less fat and calories.

This recipe ended up super moist and super tasty. My 8 kids devoured it literally in minutes!

If all of my kiddos declared this a winner, you know it really is good.

Finally a healthy banana bread with applesauce that tastes great!

This recipe is so delicious that no one will ever guess that it is healthy too. Give it a try and see if your kids love it as much as mine do!

Ingredients you need:

  • Large Bananas
  • Egg
  • Pure Maple Syrup
  • Plain Greek Yogurt (whole milk)
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Melted Butter
  • Whole Wheat Flour
  • Baking Soda
  • Baking Powder
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Salt

How to make this simple healthy banana bread recipe?

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and spray a 9X5 loaf pan with a non-stick cooking spray.

Mash the bananas in a large mixing bowl.  Stir in the egg, maple syrup, plain greek yogurt, vanilla extract and melted butter.

Gently stir in the flour, baking soda, baking powder, ground cinnamon and salt until just combined.  Be careful not to over mix the batter.

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.

Bake for 45-55 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center of the bread comes out clean.

Check the bread at the 35 minute mark and carefully tent the bread with foil if the top of the bread starts to brown too quickly.

Place the pan on a wire rack and let it cool for 10-15 minutes in the pan.

Carefully remove the bread from the pan and cool completely on the wire rack.

Then the bread is ready to slice, serve and enjoy!

      Healthy substitution ideas:

      • Try almond milk for a dairy free option.
      • Make flax eggs to use instead of regular eggs.
      • Add dark chocolate chips or peanut butter morsels for a special treat.
      • Use coconut oil instead of the butter.
      • Substitute almond flour for the regular flour.
      • White whole wheat flour is another good substitute.

      How to freeze banana bread:

This recipe freezes great. You can make a lot all at once and then freeze them.

Just wrap it in cling wrap and place in a freezer bag.  Allow it to thaw on the counter until you are ready to serve. Your family will never know it came out of the freezer.

You might want to double the recipe like we do so you can have one now and one for later. It really isn’t any more work to make extra and you can stock your freezer.

This makes a great snack, breakfast idea or even dessert. The kids and the entire family love this anytime of the day.

If you need a loaf pan, I highly recommend you purchase this one – I would purchase 2. I have 2, but sometimes I wish I had 4.

This is a regular sized pan which is what I used. However, you can turn this recipe and make them into smaller loaves which are super fun for gift ideas.

If you don’t have a mini-muffin pan, I highly suggest you get one. Mini muffins just simply taste great. They are faster to cook and easier to eat.

I love my Wilton mini muffin tins, but for just a few dollars more you can get a silicone pan. These are great because the mini muffins just pop out so much easier.

We have even handed out mini loaves at Christmas and they were a huge hit. Sometimes, I add dark chocolate chips at Christmas.

How do I get bananas to ripen?

If you have bananas that are too green, there are a few things you can do to help them ripen faster. Place them in a brown paper bag and this will help the banana to get ripe.

If you want to speed it up even more, place an apple in the bag with them. This will further speed up the process.

This is a simple trick that works great. Give it a try!

Best banana bread recipe. I’ve me it as written and dairy free and both are great! It’s been added to my recipe box! I doubled the recipe and for dairy free I use margarine and 3/4 c almond milk in place of the sour cream and milk. So good! I’ve made bread and muffins it’s all turned out great no mushiness I’ve gotten from other recipes but not dry.
