How to Make Beef Ribs in the Slow Cooker

Step 1 – In a small bowl, stir together the brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, chili powder, cumin, black pepper and salt.

Step 2 – If your ribs come in a rack, remove any skin from the back of the ribs and cut them into smaller pieces so that they will fit into a crock pot.

Step 3 – Rub the seasoning mixture onto both sides of the ribs.

Step 4 – Pour the water into the bottom of the crock pot.

Step 5 – Layer the ribs into the crock pot and pour 1 ½ cups of barbecue sauce on top as evenly as possible. Cover and Cook until tender.

Pro Tips for Perfect Crockpot Ribs

  • Grill – You can also grill the baby back ribs a few minutes on each side instead of broiling them if you prefer.  Don’t skip this step as it adds a ton of flavor to the sauce by caramelizing it.
  • Prepare Ribs – Removing the membrane on the bone side helps seasoning penetrate and improves tenderness.
  • Cooking Time – We usually cook the ribs on low for about 6-8 hours as we start them in the morning & they are ready when get home. Feel free to cook on high if your prefer.

Flavor Variations

  • Asian Flavor Ribs – Swap BBQ sauce for hoisin, add 2 Tbsp soy sauce, and finish with toasted sesame seeds.
  • Chipotle Honey – Stir 2 chopped chipotle peppers in adobo sauce and 3 Tbsp honey, brown sugar or maple syrup into the sauce for smoky-sweet heat.
  • Spices and Sauces – Feel free to change or add in spices to what you prefer. We have added in ½ tsp of onion powder to these beef short ribs for added flavor. We have even substituted the water for beef broth, apple cider vinegar or red wine sauce.
